Get Rid of Your Noisy Garage Door!

One of the biggest complaints we receive from our customers is that they have a Noisy Garage Door. Most of them have accepted this as normal, but a noisy garage door is anything but! There are quite a few items that could be causing your noisy garage door. We’re going to go over just a few of the most common reasons that you can check out on your own.

Worn Down Rollers: Most doors come with a very generic roller on them that is either made of plastic or a low quality steel. When these rollers wear down from normal wear and tear, they can cause a very noisy garage door! You could hear anything from a loud clunk to a screeching drag across the tracks. Spraying your rollers with lubricant is just a bandaid that covers up the real problem. These rollers should be changed immediately for safety reasons and to ensure proper garage door operation. We always recommend upgrading your rollers to a neoprene roller with a 13 ball bearing center for a nice smooth, quiet operation. This one change makes all the difference in ridding yourself of a noisy garage door.

Garage Door Hinges: Your garage door is a huge moving piece of your home. Like anything else, it needs to be lubricated quite frequently. Your hinges not being lubricated over time will cause you to have an extremely noisy garage door. Most of the time, a simple garage door lube will do the trick. Just make sure to spray the hinges heavily and operate the door a few times to work the lubricant into the hinge. Poof, noisy garage door gone!

Chain Drive Opener: If your noise is coming from your opener rail, it’s most likely a chain drive opener. This style of automatic garage door opener is the most common due to it’s inexpensive pricing. However, you get what you pay for. It’s also the loudest by far. If you really want to quiet down a noisy garage door, consider upgrading your chain drive opener to a much quieter belt drive opener. This style opener operates exactly the same, but instead of a metal chain, the rail runs on a rubber belt. Don’t worry, the belt has reinforced steel underneath of it to ensure it lasts just as long! Usually a belt drive opener only costs $50-$75 more than a chain drive opener and makes a world of difference with noisy garage doors. You can check out this article on the differences between the two garage door openers.

If you have a noisy garage door at home, take a look at these 3 items and you may be able to pinpoint just how to quiet that noisy garage door down. If you can’t find the time or would like a professional to overlook your door for you, give us a call. We offer a completely free service call to have a Certified Technician come out and inspect your door. He will perform a thorough safety and maintenance check and advise you of anything he finds.
