The Back to the Future Kitchen

Date: October 21, 2015

Marty McFly and Doc  will arrive in Hill Valley from, time-travelling from 1985. Screenwriter Bob Gale and director Robert Zemeckis had a very different vision for how the world would look a quarter of a century later when the film was released in 1989.
Fax machines were still in every home, flying cars and hoverboards were the principal forms of transportation. There were several things where the movie hit the spot, especially when it comes to the smart home.

Back to the Future 11: The majority of homes don’t have refrigerators that text them or have Wi-Fi-connected thermostats.
2015: In the next five years, the smart home market is expected to grow. Big name brands like Siemens are getting in on the trend, big time.

Back to the Future 11: The McFlys were all about their Black & Decker Hydrator. This device that could turn a mini pizza into a full-sized, steaming pie of yumminess.
2015: While dehydrated food is available for the adventurous amongst us who like camping trips,  and emergency kits, the hydrator is more related to the omnipresent microwave of today.
The in-home freeze dryer can be purchased today..

Back to the Future 11: Marty’s mother controlled the Hydrator by talking to it,
2015: One appliance that’s set to première this year is a voice-activated oven/microwave called Maid. It has voice-recognition, use gesture control, and the appliance can set its own cooking time based on the recipe you fancy.
In this case, today’s technology is far more advanced than fiction.

Back to the Future 11: In the McFlys’ kitchen was a drop-down garden, bursting with grapes and other fruits.
2015: In-home smart gardens are available today. Systems can adjust light and water per every plants’ growing schedules.
Work for the future: To get them to emerge from the ceiling.

Back to the Future 11 Marty’s son has to shout at the voice-activated garden before it raises and lowers.
2015: Siri or Google Now are sometimes subject to selective hearing. Not much has changed there….
