Although both Limestone and sandstone are sedimentary rocks, they share several different properties that restrict their combination to be used in the construction sector. In fact, this could be the case for other natural stones as well that are frequently employed as building material; again due to variations in their individual characteristics.

Properties like hardness level, porosity level and intensity of acid resistance are different for both the stones that can create problems in terms of their place of installation, purpose of installation and maintenance as well.

Their efficiency to take polish are also different, hence cannot be simultaneously employed to decorate a particular space. If someone tries to incorporate the two with different levels of polish at a particular location, chances are fairly high that the person would end up ruining the décor of that space. So, it is better to avoid such instances.

The rate of natural weathering and aging of sandstone is quite different from that of limestone; hence using them together at a time is not at all a wise decision as a lot of variation between the two would supposedly occur over time. As far as price is concerned, differences might occur, due to the fact that limestone and sandstone occur in different regions and transportation could make any one of the two more expensive, which totally depends on the variety and place of origin of that stone.

At this point of time, one should also learn about some of the basic differences between the two natural stones:

  • Limestone is formed by the sedimentation of calcium carbonate, whereas sandstone is formed from rock grains and sand-size mineral particles.
  • Sandstone has fragments of pre-existing minerals and rocks, but limestone has skeletal fractions of marine creatures like mollusks and coral.
  • Limestone primarily composed of calcite and aragonite minerals, while sandstone mostly consists of feldspar and quartz.
  • Limestone features a crystalline structure, but sandstone occasionally has loosely cemented grains that are distinctly visible.
  • Formation of limestone is generally restricted to marine and other aquatic zones. On the other hand, sandstone formation could happen in other places as well.
