Everything you need to know about area rugs

It’s not easy to pick a rug to adorn your home. Go through these tips to find the right rug for your space. You could easily Buy Cheap Area Rugs online both for indoor and outdoor spaces.

When it comes to buying a rug, no amount of advice is ever enough. It takes an expert eye and good taste to buy a quality area rug. But these days the internet is the answer to any problem. I surfed the net at lengths and here’s what I found about Area Rugs. (Oh! by the way, the internet is a cool place to buy indoor and outdoor rugs.)

There’s no thumb rule to the perfect way to use area rugs, all the rules are to be bent and reinvented to create the perfect harmony for your place.  On the whole, here’s what you can play with:

  • Only the front legs on the rug – this works well in most places, the front legs on the rug gives the whole area a pulled together look. This approach gives the whole arrangement an airy feel and at the same time brings together the various parts of the furniture that are intended to demarcate the area.
  • Legs on the rug – This arrangement helps clearly differentiated the various areas of a larger space.  Such an arrangement makes large and cold areas look warm and compact. It’s particularly useful when you want to use different parts of a large room for different things.
  • A combination of both the above – This arrangement gives a warm and airy look to the room. It lets you play around where you can have some elements entirely on the rug giving them a closer and compact look and break the very same with some elements that have only the front leg on the carpet.
  • All legs off the carpet – That’s right this works too! If you want to use small rugs, just to add some color to your decor this works well. Remember to coordinate the color scheme and patterns to create a complete look.
  • Leave 18 inches of floor around the rug – If you like to cover most of your space with a carpet, its best to leave at least 18 inches of bare floor around the rug. For smaller areas, you can try lesser inches.
  • Rug under the bed – Ideally the rug goes under and three-fourths the length of the bed extending 18 to 12 inches beyond the sides. Another way to decorate your bedroom floor is to use a runner at the foot of the bed.
  • The carpet should extend 24 inches around your dining table – A rug complements your dining area only if it’s visible. Make sure there is enough of the rugs around your table even after the chairs are pushed back.
  • Don’t use rugs of the same size in one room – Equal sized rugs divide the room making it appear smaller than it is. Use rugs that are of different sizes and shape to add texture and designate different spaces in your room without clearly dividing it and making it look small.

But before you arrange the rug you need to check out the various fabric or material used to make area rugs. You could definitely buy Area Rugs Online, but check out the different fibers before you choose one. There are of two types – synthetic fibers and natural fibers.

Synthetic fibers are cheaper, durable and easy to clean. They are mostly water, sunlight and mildew resistant fibers. Some examples are Acrylic, Polypropylene, Olefin and Nylon.

Natural fibers are generally softer and require high maintenance. They might not be the best to clean regularly. Fabrics like cotton are not as durable as woolen fibers and may wear after repeated washes. Wool, on the other hand, is easier to clean and more durable of all the natural fibers. Silk rugs have luster that is second to no other fabric, but requires heavy maintenance. Jute and Sisal are other fibers that usually have an earthy and coarse feel.

Once you are done with the material, you’ll have to choose between hand woven rugs and machine made rugs. The machine made ones are cheaper whereas as the handmade ones last longer. Here’s how you can easily tell from a machine made rug from hand woven ones:

Fringe: If the rug has sewn over fringes, it’s a machine made rug. Just flip the rug over and search for a neat stitch that holds the fringe in place.  With hand woven rugs the fringe is an extension of the rug, it is not separately attached.

Edges: Machine made rugs either have edges that are bound by binding tapes or yarn serge. Handmade rugs have smooth sides comprising of the outside warp threads. Often these sides have more than just a single warp thread.

Knots: Flip the rug over to the back and check out the knots. Machine made rugs have even and neat knots. Even the pattern would be in neat straight lines with no variation. Handmade rugs, on the other hand, will have uneven knots with discrepancies in the shading, coverage and thickness. Even the knots would be wavering lines.

That was what I could put together about area rugs and on how to buy one for your home. Once you’ve got a clear picture of what you need you could easily buy Cheap Area Rugs online. You can also get exquisitely designed, and hand woven indoor outdoor rugs online.
