How to choose a rug for your place?

Area Rugs are used to define a space in the room and make it warm and cozy. They are home decor accessories that can be easily changed as the seasons change. These days there are plenty of options online and it shouldn’t be difficult to buy cheap area rugs online.  The tough part is choosing the right rug to fit your home and complement the rest of the decor.

Here’s how you can begin:

Begin by measuring the space you intend to use the area rug in. Sometimes a few inches can make all the difference, so carefully measure out the area.

The next thing you need to consider is the color of the area rug. Make sure you choose a color that complements the walls and the furniture. Darker shades would make your room smaller and cozy whereas light colored rugs make the room look larger and spacious. The color of your rug need not necessarily match the colors of the room but try and find colors that coordinate. You can carry a shade card with you when you hunt for a rug, or just buy them online.

Once you’ve sorted out the colors you might want to consider patterns. If you have patterned furniture or wallpaper, your rug should be plain (you don’t want it to compete with the rest of the room.) Each element of home decor should complement each other and blend well. For plain walls and solid furniture patterned rugs are an excellent way to create a focal point. You can check out the various designs for area rugs online. Choose between ornate, medallion and repetitive patterns.

Area rugs come in different textures, you might want to feel them and depending upon the placement, choose an appropriate texture. Natural fibers like jute or sisal have a pleasantly coarse feel to it. They would complement hardwood or super-smooth floors beautifully. Cotton and wool rugs are super soft and would complement living areas or bedrooms. Cheaper fibers like nylon and acrylic are also a good option especially for areas with heavy footfalls. Buy cheap area rugs online and you will have plenty of options to choose from.

Consider different sizes and shapes before you finalize on an area rug. For large open living areas here’s how you can combine rugs and create little cozy nooks – use rugs with colors that coordinate, but have different patterns or proportions. Differently sized rugs add more angles to the room instead of bluntly splitting the room in two. When you shop online you can choose between a huge collection of cheap indoor and outdoor area rugs. If you are the type who likes to buy a rug, use it for a while and then throw them, you can find plenty of choices online.

There are different techniques to making a rug; here are a few terms you ought to know when you purchase a rug.

Hand carved: the weaver cuts/shears the rug to give it a design or depth.

Hand hooked: the carpet is woven by creating patterns by forming equally sized loops on the surface of the rug. These loops are harnessed onto the base of the rug.

Hand knotted:  threads are looped through warps and then knotted by hand to form different patterns.

Hand tufted: manually operated hand tufting guns are used to weave the entire rug before sewing on a backcloth.

Head set: this technique is used to faux wool rugs out of polypropylene. The fiber is twisted to give an almost wool like appearance to it.

Jacquard: this technique is used in mechanized looms to create patterns based on punched cards placed on a belt.

Line Count: it is the number of knots or stitches per square inch. Line counts are a unit of quality of the rug.

Pile: this is the surface of the carpet, which we see.

Needle count/ stitches: This is a count of the number of stitches or loops of the yarn. A higher count indicates a dense rug.

Wefts and warp: the threads on a loom are the warp, rugs are woven by filling the warps with wefts, by weaving through the warps.

Wilton-loom: this loom spins knotted rugs which resemble hand knotted ones. Here the pile is woven through two backing and then they are split to get two separate rugs

Once you are done with selecting a rug it is important to get a rug pad to keep you rug in place and in good shape. Rug pads help hold the rug properly and so reduce wear and tear by absorbing the impact of feet. These pads also protect your flooring by preventing the coarse rugs from scratching the floor. Pads come in different materials such as adhesive coated polyester fabric, PVC coated polyester, etc.
