Pros and Cons of Living In the Outskirts of the City

If you have reached that stage in your life when you have a job you love and a family to take care of, the most logical step is to buy your own home. You have probably browsed through the offers, available at the sites of the real estate agents and the ads posted in your local community website, but you are still hesitating whether to make such an investment or not. If you want to buy a bigger House and you are not willing to loan a huge amount from the bank, why don’t you consider buying a property in the suburbs? Here are the advantages and disadvantages of Living in the city outskirts:

  • As mentioned above, properties in the suburbs are less expensive. You can buy a house for half of the sum you would pay if it was located in a central district. However, you should take into account the transport costs as well as the inconveniences related to using the public transport. If you are likely to put up with these disadvantages, go ahead and look for an appealing offer for housing in the suburbs.
  • If you are not sure whether living in the outskirts is for you, you can rent a house there just to make sure waking up two hours earlier to go to work would not pose a difficulty. You don`t risk much doing that – better give this new lifestyle a try before you dive into living in a way you are not used to. Better spend some money on monthly rents than buying a new house you don`t find convenient. If you don’t feel it is your location, inform the landlord, carry out an end of tenancy cleaning and move back to the lively neighbourhood you are used to.
  • Speaking of professional cleaning services, living on the outskirts might be a problem if you use house cleaning or any other professional service. Most cleaning companies cover the key districts and regions, but when it comes to finding a company that delivers services in the outskirts, things might get difficult. However, there are reliable domestic cleaning services that are able to serve the outskirts – just check this in advance so you don`t have to deal with this hassle later.
  • If you dream about having an own house and spending quality times with your loved ones in the garden, that dream cannot be materialised if you live in the city. Just think about the tranquility at the backyard where you can invite guests for a barbecue or just enjoy the greenery. In other words, living on the outskirts can be the best thing for you if you are sick and tired of the noise, the bad air quality and the crowds of people.
  • Speaking of crowds, traffic jams and polluted air, these three factors have an extremely negative impact on your health. You get nervous when you get stuck in the traffic, you get angry when you wait in a queue, not to mention the poor air quality that leads to some serious health issues. If you choose to live in the suburbs, you will not have to worry about that. The traffic will not be so intense, the air will be fresher and you will avoid the crowds. You never know, the neighbours might be really nice people, but that’s an added bonus.
  • However, imagine you are invited to a dinner in the city or you just want to hang out with friends. In this case living too far away from the city is a great inconvenience. You can either catch a taxi or spend the night at a hotel or at a friend’s house.
  • Living in the outskirts can be pretty different from living in the city on terms of communication. In the suburbs, people live in tight-knit communities, which can have a positive impact on your social life. When was the last time you talked to a stranger while waiting for your bus? Actually, do you even know the neighbours living next door? As the saying goes, the big city gives a lot, but also takes a lot.
  • Living in the outskirts means you can grow your organic produce. Who needs the fruits and vegetables labeled “organic” when you can grow your own ones. Once you pick up the vegetables you have grown, you would immediately be able to tell the great difference in the taste. Homemade salads, barbecue, spacious backyard and lovely family. It seems these factors make up for those couple of miles you have to commute to work and back?

As you can see living in the outskirts has its advantages and disadvantages but you have to decide for yourself which prevails. If you are no longer willing to tolerate the noise and you don’t mind the half an hour commute to work in the morning, go ahead and buy/ rent a house in the suburbs. If you are not willing to sacrifice your city lifestyle, just stay – whatever makes you happy!
