Packing Tips & Tricks

Moving can be stressful and we here at Easy Moves Moving & Storage know that. That’s why we’re here to help guide you through every step to ensure that your move is an easy move. One of the most critical and stressful parts of moving is packing. It can feel overwhelming at first, but we have some tips to help make it as easy as possible.

Z

Start Packing Weeks in Advance:

By starting to pack early, you won’t become overwhelmed with packing as your move day looms closer. Don’t wait till the last second.

Z

Furniture Disassembly:

When disassembling furniture be sure to place all hardware into a plastic bag that is clearly labeled to what piece it corresponds to and room it belongs in. Also, do not apply tape directly to any pieces as the tape may strip veneers and/or finishes. On a budget? Disassembling your furniture before our crews arrival will save you time and money.

Z

Important Documents:

Legal documents and family medical records should be personally transported with you as they contain sensitive information.

Z

Hazardous Materials:

State and Federal law prohibit Easy Moves from transporting any of the following: flammables, paint & paint thinners, compressed gases, ammunition, explosives, corrosives, cleaning fluids, and detergents.

Z

Taping Boxes:

Tape the bottom of the Boxes with two pieces of tape. Do not close boxes by interlocking the flaps as they will not be stackable. Tape the tops closed with two pieces of tape aswell ensuring that both the bottom and top of the box are flat and stackable.

Z

Packing Dishes:

Dishes must be packed with utmost of care as to prevent damages. Each dish should be packed in ink-free packing paper and/or bubble wrap. Cups and glasses should be packed in paper with cushioning. Dishes and glasses should be packed snugly, but not too tightly. Remember to fill voids with cushioning to prevent shifting and to pack heavier items towards the bottom to prevent toppling. You can use towels, oven mitts, etc. as cushioning or purchase some of our excellent bubble wrap and packing paper.

Z

Packing Small Items:

To prevent small items such as knick-knacks from becoming lost or thrown out with packing paper, wrap them in colored tissue paper and make a note on the box to remind you before throwing out the box.

Z

Don't Mix Items:

Try not to mix items from different rooms in the same box as doing so will make unpacking more confusing and time consuming. Packing boxes by room will make unpacking much faster.

Z

Pack An Essentials Kit:

Pack a box with toiletries (toilet paper, toothpaste & brush, soap, etc.), disposable kitchen utensils, snacks, chargers, basic tools, and remotes. Having this box at your new place will make settling in much easier.

Z

Labeling Boxes:

Label boxes on their top and sides as they’re packed. Labeling the boxes by room on the top righthand corners and the contents on the top middle will help our movers organize and offload boxes accordingly. The more clearly labeled a box is the less time is wasted asking where a box should go. Clearly label boxes with fragiles as to prevent them from being packed improperly.

Z

Lampshades:

Pack lampshades by themselves, as they are extremely fragile and are more susceptible to many forms of damage. Do not pack lampshades with newspaper as the ink may permanently stain the lampshade. Boxes with lampshades should be clearly marked as to ensure they are not stacked upon. Lamp harps should also be removed and padded as they are easily bent.

Z

Do Not Over Pack Boxes:

A good rule of thumb is the heavier the item, the smaller the box. Over packing a box could lead to bulging which leads to instability.

“Hindsight is 20/20” — it’s a cliche adage, but it’s pretty accurate when it comes to moving! It seems that you always wish you organized differently, planned more, or simply had an easier way to navigate the moving process.
