Downsizing? Make Your Small Living Space Feel Big

The popularity of smaller homes and apartments is growing. Whether new homebuyers just don’t feel the need for larger living spaces, or current homeowners are needing to downsize, the desire for Small Living spaces is getting bigger. Of course, just because you want a smaller living space because you don’t need or want as much room doesn’t mean that you want your home to feel small.

Living in a smaller home has its challenges. Namely, where do you store things, and what are you supposed to do when you have guests or company. Fortunately, there are some really clever tips and tricks that you can use in order to make your small Living Space Feel bigger, while at the same time keeping it uniquely your own.

Whether you’ve already been searching the internet for ideas on how to make your small living Space Feel larger, or if this is your first time reading about it, one thing will be readily apparent. A space feels bigger when there is more light. Nothing makes a room feel smaller than it really is than having it be too dark. Even if you have a large space, a lack of light will make it feel smaller than it really is.

Natural light is the best solution to making a space feel bigger, so you will need to do what you can to maximize it. Use mirrors and sheer window curtains to reflect and let more light in. Bring in as much light as you can.

Color ties directly into light, and light doesn’t just mean illumination. You want to use light colors. Lightly colored walls, flooring, and ceilings instantly make a space feel much bigger than it really is. If you have dark floors that you can’t afford to replace, or you simply can’t replace them, use lighter area rugs.

Mirrors and sheer window curtains can let more light into a space. The clever use of mirrors can actually make walls virtually disappear, creating the illusion of depth and therefore more space. Bring that same principle into your furniture.

Clear furniture, like glass coffee tables or glass cabinet doors, is a great way to open up a room. Because you can see through some of your furnishings, it will look light you have a lot more space than you really do. It’s a great way to bring in functionality to a room that might be a little tighter than you’d like, because it won’t look like the clear furnishings are taking up any room.

If space is really at a premium, don’t clutter up the room any more than you need to. Does your bedroom really only have room for a bed? Don’t try to squeeze a dresser into the room. Instead, use a bed that you can actually use as storage, because it has built in drawers or lifts up to reveal more storage space.

If you really need a home office or a desk, then consider using a desk that can double as a dining room table. Look for furniture that serves more than one purpose. Get a little creative. Find out what your needs are, and how you can find furniture that meets a couple of them, all in one. Using a couch that has built in storage, like bookshelves, is a great way to keep your books handy while using the couch, and also freeing up other real estate in your living room.

If you need extra storage space, get a little creative and think beyond the typical solutions. What’s the one place where you have plenty of storage space? Your walls. Use your walls as a vertical storage space and you’ll free up the floor for the necessities. Not only will you be keeping everything neatly stored away and easy to use, but you can also have your items serve as decoration as well. Just like double duty furniture, you are freeing up valuable space, while adding character and accessibility to your home at the same time.

This last tip is a great one, even if it has already been briefly mentioned. A lighter color of paint on the ceiling can make a room look bigger than it is. But what about making the ceiling seem higher than it really is? This wonderful illusion is actually a lot easier to pull of than you might think. Simply tape off an outline, about one foot from where the ceiling meets the wall. Paint up to that line in the same color as the wall, and then paint the rest of the ceiling a lighter color, if it isn’t already. That extra bit of color will draw your eye up, giving you the illusion of a higher ceiling.
