7 Interior Design Hacks That Take 7 Minutes or Less

I often get asked for quick tips that can make a house look more put together and polished. There are so many tricks of the trade used by interior designers like me to make a home look professionally done.

If you’ve got seven minutes, you can tackle any one of these seven Interior Design Hacks. Each one will help you make an impact in any room in your home, even if you’re busy and don’t have much time to spend “arranging” things. Over seven days, you can do all of these interior design hacks, and your home will feel more warm and inviting.

1. “Chop” your pillows

Throw pillows are a wonderful way to add color and texture to a room. Make them look their best by fluffing them, then “chopping” them in the middle with the heel of your hand to create an indentation on the top. (This works best with down- or feather-filled pillows.) A chopped pillow invites relaxation, showcases texture and pattern, and helps draw the eye to these stylish pieces.

2. Rotate accessories

Take a quick inventory of the accessories in any room, eliminate some (put in storage), and rearrange what’s left. Most rooms are too cluttered and benefit from fewer items on display. If you have a lacquered or painted tray, use it to showcase two or three accessories, like a decorative box and vase. You can also move around throw pillows and lap blankets. Just rearranging and culling your accessories will give a room a fresh feel and takes very little time.

3. Add “oomph” to your entryway

Is your foyer console table sitting empty, or being used for junk and clutter? Take seven minutes to clear it off and move a few of those accessories you pulled from other rooms to the entryway. This is the first place you and visitors see when you walk into the house. Make the view welcoming and attractive.

4. Move bedroom area rugs out from the wall

A bedroom will feel bigger if you move your area rug out one-third of the way down the length of the bed, like above. Try it! You’ll be amazed how it opens up the space. With a friend, this shouldn’t take more than seven minutes, we promise!

5. Change up one frame

If you’ve got three frames hanging level, try moving the middle frame up a few inches. Look at the difference it makes in the photo above. The raised middle photo echoes the upward curve of the headboard, and has a sense of movement of its own.

6. Add fresh flowers into the mix

Buy the small bouquets of single types of flowers at the store and break them up into multiple smaller vases, either mixing the flowers, or keeping one type per vase. When you’re rotating your accessories, include fresh flowers in vases you already have on display.

7. Create a cozy nook

Got a “dead” corner? Create a cozy nook by adding a chair or ottoman with a pillow or throw blanket. Maybe you’ve even got an extra piece of art to hang there. If you’ve got a side table, put two or three accessories there. No table? No problem! Use a small tray to hold accessories, like you see above.

Bonus hack: Steam curtains/sheers

If you already have a fabric steamer, fire it up and get the wrinkles out of panels or sheers on windows. This will make a huge impact, making your room seem pulled together (it takes about seven minutes per panel).
