What are the Best Types of Christmas Trees for Apartments?

'Tis the season for eggnog, cinnamon-scented brooms and Christmas Tree shopping. While we all wish we had 12-foot ceilings to get the tallest, most lush tree from the local lot, for apartment dwellers, the options are a bit more limited due to space.

But don't worry – just because your tree needs to be smaller to fit your one-bedroom apartment, it doesn't mean you have to go artificial and miss out on that amazingly fresh pine smell.

Better yet, once the season is over, your tree can be recycled as it's biodegradable and you don't run the chance of your pets eating chemical residue from artificial tree branches.

Let's get in the Christmas spirit! Check out the best types of real Christmas trees below and head out to pick out your favorite one to decorate.

Fraser Fir

If you're looking for a magical Christmas tree, like those from the movies, look no further than the Fraser Fir. The needles are the perfect green hue and not prickly at all.

It's also a great holiday guest since as long as it's watered on a consistent schedule, it will retain most of its needles. No endless vacuuming here. This tree loves cold winters and its slender shape can fit any small apartment.

Tabletop Spruce

If you won't be home as much during the holidays or you're limited by space in your cozy living room, a real tabletop Spruce Tree can be the best fit for your holiday lifestyle. They're affordable and come in at around 3 to 4 feet, which makes them perfect for the top of a side table or bookshelf.

As opposed to other small trees, like the rosemary tree, the Spruce Tree thrives inside dark apartments and as long as they're watered, it will survive the festivities and not drop many needles.

Scotch Pine

While the needles on this beauty are sharp, the needle retention and easy upkeep make the Scotch Pine a great choice for your small apartment. Even if you forget to water it, it still retains its needles.

The other downside? You might have to go minimal on the ornaments since there's normally little space between branches to hang anything. Steer more toward garlands, ribbons, lights and tinsel to make it as festive as possible.

Colorado Blue Spruce

The Colorado Blue Spruce is for those apartment dwellers that love to put their own twist on the holidays and don't stick to just red and green decorations. Due to its blue-ish hue, this tree is best decorated with cool colors and silver for a North Pole vibe. Its branches are sturdy for those especially heavy ornaments so no worries about them sliding off and breaking.

Balsam Fir

If you're a fan of minimalist trees with lightweight ornaments, the Balsam Fir may be a great fit for your space. This tree is very fragrant, so it will put you in a festive mood quickly.

The needles are a beautiful dark green and would look great against gold and silver accents. Despite the flexible branches on this tree, the needles stay put for a long time.
