2017 Sofa Trends

Your Sofa just might be the most important piece of furniture you own. And while it’s a good idea to buy one that’s timeless enough to look great for years to come, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun with the design trends of right now. These 2017 sofa trends are a way to anchor your living or family room with style and personality—without boxing yourself into a look that limits your room from evolving over the years.

Go Long

If you have the space for it, there are more and more grande-sized sofas on the market. They look dramatic along large walls or in lofts, and they offer prime napping possibilities. Sectionals, often large in scale, also remain on-trend. After all, they can be configured to your floor plan and offer flexible seating for families and entertaining.

Arrange your sectional sofa so that it doesn’t interrupt the flow of your floorplan.

On the other end of the spectrum, petite sofas are also trending up, which is perfect if you live in a smaller urban apartment. Try arranging two petite sofas face-to-face in your conversation area.

Performance Upholstery

The desire for durability and ease of care, along with advances in fabric technology, have led to the increasing popularity of performance fabrics. Some shoppers are even ordering indoor sofas in outdoor fabrics like Sunbrella, which are now so soft and appealing you’d never know they were made to withstand the elements. Life gets messy, so this a huge win for families with pets or kids who want to live in style. Classic velvet, now having a comeback moment, instantly elevates the room and is also surprisingly durable.

Green: The New Neutral

Whatever your fabric choice, solid neutrals are big, with subtle shades of green coming on especially strong. Your sofa is an investment, and you want to be happy with the color for a long time. Green—whether a calming light sage or a sophisticated deep olive—blends well with a wide range of accent colors and furniture materials.

Metal Legs

Put some shine on your sofa. Brass is popular this year, showing up everywhere from fashion shows to shelter magazines. Warm brass legs on your sofa allow you to bring this trend into the room in a subtle way that will look current for a long time. It ties in beautifully with accessories, too. Add more pop with a brass mirror, curtain hardware, candleholders or a metallic embroidered pillow.

Our last word on sofa trends? If a certain look really speaks to you, go for it. Sometimes a trend can become part of your personal style in a way that’s just meant to be—and you just might find that today’s trend shapes your signature style for the long run.
