Construction

Layers

The Cocoon mattress is made in both a medium and firm version. For the purpose of this review, we decided to take a look at both mattresses. Both mattresses will have their layers broken down.

Medium Cocoon

• Top layer (comfort) – 2″ of memory foam. This top layer of memory foam is designed to provide the initial comfort and pressure relief for the sleeper.
• Middle layer (support + transition) – 2″ of transitional poly foam. The middle layer acts as the support layer as well as the transitional layer from the softer memory foam top layer into the more dense bottom layer.
• Bottom layer (support + foundation) – 6″ base foam. This bottom layer primarily acts as the foundational base for the mattress as a whole. Additionally, it also provides a degree of deep compression support (especially for heavier sleepers)

Firm Cocoon

• Top layer (comfort) – 2″ of memory foam. Similar to the medium Cocoon, this top layer acts to provide both comfort and pressure relief for sleepers. However, the thinner profile creates a firmer feel than the medium version.
• Bottom layer (support + foundation) – 8″ of base foam. The bottom layer of the firm Cocoon is designed to provided the support for the sleeper in addition to acting as the foundational base for the mattress as a whole.

Cover

The Cocoon mattress is actually offered with two different covers. Buyers have the option of purchasing the Cocoon classic, which utilizes their basic cover, or the Cocoon Chill, which contains a phase changing cover.

For starters, the classic Coccon cover is fairly simple. It’s made from a combination of polyester and cotton. By combining these two materials, the cover is soft, stretchy, and breathable.

The Cocoon Chill cover is slightly different. By adding a phase change material, the cover actually has a cool to the touch feel. Phase change material is designed to absorb and store body heat, providing either a cool or warm sleeping surface, depending on the temperature of the sleeper. In other words, the phase change cover tends to acts a temperature regulator for the mattress and sleeper. Once again, the cover is still soft, stretchy, and breathable.

The cover does add a nice cool to the touch feel when you first get in bed. It’s cooler for the first 15-30 minutes of sleeping and then begins to reach an equilibrium with your body. Of course, if you move to a different area of the mattress that new area will be cooler until your body’s heat causes it to reach the tuned temperature of the phase change material.

I wouldn’t describe the feeling as cold, but it is certainly cool (at least the those first 15-30 minutes). Most sleepers should enjoy the feel of the Chill cover.

Aesthetically, these two covers are virtually identical. The only difference between the two is the small “Chill” tag adorned to the foot of the Cocoon Chill mattress. Other than this, both covers contain the white and blue color scheme with a diamond pattern running across the top piece of fabric.

Firmness, Feel, & Support

The Cocoon mattress is offered in two different firmness levels. To begin with, the medium comes in at a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm. In addition to the medium mattress is their firm, which brings home an 8 out of 10.

For starters, the feel of the Cocoon is well balanced on both the medium and firm version. There is no overly enveloped level of sinkage associated with the medium and the firm has even less. Additionally, both mattresses have a nice level of pressure relief.

FAQ: what mattress firmness do you need?

With regards to support, I was able to sleep in all positions without incurring any pains or discomfort. Personally, I preferred the feel and comfort dynamic of the medium, simply because I am able to sink into the mattress just a touch more and enjoy an easier transition (due to the middle layer) into the more supportive and firmer base foam.

On the firm Cocoon I felt as if I was hitting more of a support wall. This did surprise me a bit, as I’m just not that heavy at 140 pounds. I would have liked to have seen the Cocoon use a thicker comfort layer, even in the firm feel, as I think many sleepers may feel pressure points created by virtue of the 2″ thin comfort layer and no transition foam. The firm Cocoon has a bit more of a floating feel to it, as there is less overall sinkage.

Next up, we’ll touch on bounce and motion transfer. Overall bounce was fairly minimal, which was to be expected due to the top layers of memory foam. On the other hand, the motion transfer is virtually zero. The lower level of bounce creates less movement across the mattress. Throughout my sleep tests, neither my wife or I woke up from the other changing positions or getting out of bed. Lighter sleepers will definitely find the motion transfer of this mattress to be beneficial.

With respect to cooling the Cocoon does a pretty good job. The Cocoon Chill definitely has a leg up on the regular version of the Cocoon by Sealy and for the majority of sleepers I think it’s worth spending the extra $150 to get the cooler cover. That said, I think it’s important to be realistic about overall cooling. Ultimately, the Cocoon still is using memory foam as a top layer. As a result, it’s going to sleep warmer than a coil, hybrid, latex, or other less heat retentive foams.

If you have average cooling needs the phase change cover should be enough to keep you comfortable, but for those sleepers who naturally heat up more during the night you’ll want to be sure you are okay with the feel of memory foam.

GUIDE: how to choose a mattress

My biggest complaint with the Cocoon is simply the smell. It was extremely strong out of the box and remained so for several weeks. It took several weeks for the smell to fully dissipate. If you are sensitive to smells you will very likely want to allow the mattress to air out in an open room for a couple of weeks prior to using.

Sinkage Tests

All mattress reviews on Sleepopolis go through a short series of sinkage tests. These tests are designed to provide you with insight on how the mattress will perform under various conditions, pressures, and positions.

• Lying on back – while lying on my back with all of my weight spread evenly across the mattress, I saw 2″ of sinkage on the medium and 1″ on the firm.
• Lying on side – while lying on my side, I saw 3″ of sinkage on the medium and 2″ on the firm.
• Sitting on the edge (conservative) – while sitting on the edge with my butt slightly back on the mattress, I saw 3.5″ of sinkage on the medium and 2.5″ on the firm.
• Sitting on the edge (aggressive) – in a more aggressive sitting position with all of my weight directly on the edge, I saw 5″ of sinkage on the medium and 4″ on the firm.
• Standing in the middle – with all of my weight standing at one point on the mattress, I saw 5.5″ of sinkage on the medium and 5.5″ on the firm.

Keep in mind, sinkage results may vary based on body weight and body type. As a reference point, I weigh 140 pounds.

Who should buy the Cocoon mattress?

Overall, I feel like the Cocoon by Sealy is a pretty solid mattress. Having two different firmness options is a nice addition, as is the ability to have a cooler cover upgrade. The Cocoon mattress has a memory foam feel, but with a more balanced level of sinkage.

I would recommend the Cocoon by Sealy mattress to sleepers who:

• Want a medium or firm feel – the Cocoon is available in both medium, 6 out of 10, and firm, 8 out of 10, firmnesses, where 10 is the most firm.
• Want a memory foam feel – with 2″ of memory foam on top of both the medium and firm versions of the mattress, the Cocoon has a classic memory feel. There is a slower response, less bounce, less motion transfer, and a nice level of hug and contour. It’s not quite as dramatic in the hug, contour, or sinkage as other more traditional memory foam mattresses, but still has much of the same feel.
