White and Brown Timbre Hat by Meghan Fernandes

The White and Brown Timbre Hat is a hat that has a clever construction with cables and mohair. The Timbre Hat is by Meghan Fernandes from Pom Pom Quarterly, Issue 30: Autumn 2019.

This is the first of Meghan Fernandes’ designs that I made. She is the co-founder and co-editor of Pom Pom Quarterly. PPQ’s signature is publishing patterns with interesting details and elegant construction. The White and Brown Timbre Hat follows this same profile.

The White and Brown Timbre Hat knits from the bottom up in a ribbing with the merino and mohair held double. The main part of the body also has yarn held double. The interesting part begins with the cabling because they use only the single strand of mohair. This somehow lifts the mohair on top of the hat’s body. The cables intertwine to make a subtle and beautifully fuzzy design on the surface of the hat.

The white base yarn is Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash in aran weight, using about 70% of the skein. The brown mohair in light fingering is Filatura Di Crosa Golden Line Baby Kid Extra Solid and the hat used approximately half of the skein. The combination of the wool and mohair plus the folded brim, makes this hat extra warm and fuzzy.

The Timbre Hat can easily turn inside out for another, simpler version of the hat. The stockinette on the inside doesn’t show any hint of cables from the other side.

This is the first project I’ve made that features a mohair-silk yarn. I’ve knit with Wellington Fibres’ mohair-wool blends before, but never with this type of mohair. I enjoyed this new yarn and immediately started another mohair project. We don’t have much mohair in our stash, which gives us another opportunity to buy some more!

For this project, I used 3.75mm / US 5 and 4.0mm / US 6 needles to make size 1 of the hat. This is the smallest of three sizes available. As I knit the hat, the size appeared rather small. However, after blocking it on our hat mold, the hat fit my 55cm / 21.5 in head perfectly.

The white and beige yarns of the Timbre Hat are not a common colour combination here on Kiku Corner. I usually knit with bolder jewel tones while Meinhilde favours autumnal shades. However, the colours are really beautiful in this pattern and display the interesting design in a subtle but effective way.
