The Blue Northward Hat was a custom order for a six year old child. Despite the child size, Kenji at 10 months, is modelling it for us. The pattern is a free download by Tin Can Knits, a Canadian designer duo. They’re one of our favourite designers and we’ve knit a few of TNK’s designs here on Kiku Corner.
Like many of the other TCK’s designs, there are sizes ranging from a baby to an adult large. For this Blue Northward Hat, I was making it for a six year old, so I made the child size. It ended up being too small (my gauge has tightened in the last year or so), so I frogged it and made the small adult size. I used 5.5 mm / US 9 sized needles to obtain the correct gauge for this version. I also doubled the length of the brim to allow it to fold over if necessary. The child receiving this hat lives near Ottawa and needs the option of extra warmth!
The blue yarn is by Cascade and is 128 Superwash. This is a bulky weight merino that I purchased at The Knitting Loft in north Toronto a few years ago. Unfortunately, I’ve only visited this store once, which was when I worked in North York. Luckily, I work much closed to home now, but it means I don’t explore as many other parts of the city for my yarn adventures.
The Northward Hat is a great one skein project. It also works up fast due to the bulky weight. If you’re new to cable knitting, give this project a go! The simple, chunky cables are easy to work out and you can finish the hat quite quickly.
The Blue Northward Hat used 65% of the skein, which means that there is still a good amount of yarn left over but not enough for a whole accessory. One day I’ll find a pattern that I love to use up all the scraps from my projects.
