I knit the Colorful Wedges Baby Blanket for Kenji! It’s a free pattern by Purl Soho. The blanket is completely knit in garter stitch, so it’s a great mindless knit. I was able to pick it up and put it down countless times when looking after the baby! It’s also a great introduction to short rows, which you use to make the wedge shapes. As the Colorful Wedges Baby Blanket only uses garter stitch, the wrap and turn method of short rows are quite easy. You don’t need to pick up any wraps because they’re hidden in the plush garter stitches!
The pattern calls for about 1000 m of sport weight yarn, and you are free to use whichever colours you want. The blanket includes five colourful wedges and five plain wedges. Once I finished five of each, though, I decided to continue knitting. I wanted to make sure the blanket was big enough! I added two more wedges each of the colour and the grey. Thankfully I had enough yarn from the variegated skeins to knit another wedge. That resulted in seven colourful wedges and seven grey wedges in total.
I decided to use fingering weight yarn from my stash. A few years ago, I won five skeins of Koigu yarn in a kind of gradient that shifts from a solid yellow-orange through speckles until you hit a fully variegated yarn. To keep the blanket from being too busy, I used a solid grey as a contrast to the yellow-orange speckle gradient. You might recognize the grey as the leftover from my Branches and Buds Pullover by Carrie Bostick Hoge.
I found it fun to knit the colours, as coming to a speckled part of the yarn kept things interesting. As the yarn became more variegated, I liked to see the colours change as the yarn flew through my fingers. The lighter variegated yarn reminded me of a sunrise, with pinks, purples, roses, light greys, and watery blues. Meanwhile, the darker variegated yarn reminded of a sunset. It included oranges, pinks, and oranges, but also dark inky blues.
Now, Kenji can finally be cozy in his stroller! I wove in all the ends the day before the first major snowfall of this winter. Once he gets older, he can also use it in his crib.
