I Knit myself the Gilt Lace Cardigan, a pattern by Susanna IC. When the Spring 2020 issue came out, I immediately added this pattern to my Ravelry queue. Many of the patterns highlighted various fibres, and I love knitting with linen in the summer. I definitely want to make more projects from the issue! This cardigan uses a cotton-linen blend DK weight yarn, and the short sleeves made it perfect for summer.
I used just over three skeins of Rowan Creative Linen in the Carmin colourway. I used this yarn once before, to knit the Summer Chic Cardigan last summer. It’s a 50% linen, 50% cotton DK weight yarn that is smooth and soft and knits up beautifully. I bought it from EweKnit, one of our favourite Toronto yarn shops.
The pattern instructs you to knit the cardigan back and forth from the top down with raglan shaping. The sleeves are worked in the round from the top down. I chose to knit the 40″ size, as my high bust is 40″. Although my full bust is 43-44″, I have a loose gauge. I found the fit to be perfect, even when I used 3.0 mm needles instead of the recommended 4.0 mm ones.
Based on the images from the magazine and projects on Ravelry, I decided to make a few modifications. First, I shortened the body by 3″. That means I knit in plain stockinette 6″ past the underarms instead of the recommended 9″. Then I knit the lace as written. Instead of the 6 rows of ribbing, I knit 8. For the sleeves, I knit 7 rows instead of 6. Then I knit 5 rounds of ribbing instead of 3, so that the ribbing was closer in length to the body ribbing.
After the body and the sleeves, I knit the front and neck edging. Instead of the one buttonhole, I knit six so that I could button up the whole front. I had six small black buttons from my stash, and they fit perfectly! Short sleeved cardigans are perfect for summer work at the office. I can wear sleeveless dresses or tops with a cotton or linen cardigan and feel cool and professional.
