What is a Biblical Worldview?

You might have heard someone refer to a “biblical Worldview.”  In fact, you might even have heard me use the term!  And maybe you wondered, “what is a biblical worldview?”  In order to answer that question, we need to start by taking a step back…

What is a Worldview?

In order to address what a biblical worldview is, we have to first ask, “what is a worldview?”

At risk of coming across like a smart aleck, it’s the fundamental way you view the world.  It includes things like your beliefs about what is true and how the world operates, and the values you hold.  These serve as a filter through which you interpret everything around you.

A worldview might include whether there is a god, no god, or many gods.  That one element of worldview will, in turn, impact questions and decisions like:

  • Should you go to church?
  • Should you take your kids to church?
  • Is it okay for me to steal from my neighbor?  Why or why not?

Worldview is inextricably linked to ethics.

Even with the very same set of facts, two people with different worldviews are likely to arrive at two different conclusions.

What you think about education, vaccines, and conspiracy theories is a consequence of your worldview.  ‘Though less consequential, so is what you think about whether to take a second helping at dinner, whether to serve dessert afterward, and whether meat is an acceptable part of the meal itself.

What is Your Worldview?

What is your worldview?  If your personal worldview impacts all of life (and it does), then it’s beneficial to be aware of where you stand.

Current events and major ethics questions help reveal your worldview.  Take climate change/global warming as an example.

  • What responsibility do you believe humans have with regard to the environment?
  • Where do we fall in the hierarchy of priorities?
  • Does humanity have the capability of destroying the earth (in a complete sense) by our actions?

All of these are worldview elements that impact what you ultimately believe about the proper response to environmental concerns.

What is a Biblical Worldview?

This brings us back around, finally, to the question we started with: what is a biblical worldview?

Individuals will vary in their understanding of the details but, fundamentally, a biblical worldview is a worldview which agrees with the Bible.

I know; that sounds like restating the obvious, but sometimes we humans have a tendency to overlook the obvious!

The difficulty is, many — perhaps most — Christians don’t know the Bible.  You can’t pursue a worldview that agrees with the Bible if you don’t know what you’re agreeing with.

We can ordinarily assume that a biblical worldview (overall, not necessarily in every one of its particulars) will be different from the worldview held by unbelievers.  If your worldview is very much like that of your unbelieving friends and neighbors, that should be a red flag to evaluate yours.

The outworking of a biblical worldview should be to build up what God has designed, not to tear it down.

Is Your Worldview Biblical…and Are You Passing it On?

What is your worldview?  What is a biblical worldview?  Do they match?

The Nehemiah Institute has a test you can take to determine how closely your worldview aligns to an historical Christian worldview.  Of course you may disagree with their perspective on one or more details, but it is at least close, and can provide a starting point.  If you differ from them, you should be able to articulate why — with biblical argumentation.

Another tool you may find helpful is free, and right here at Titus 2 Homemaker: worldview questions.  This is simply a serious of questions about moral issues that call upon the reader to form a biblical response.  They’re good for helping you determine where you stand on a variety of issues — and why.

Originally they were intended for teaching my children, which brings us to the last point: are you passing a biblical worldview on to your children?  As the stats linked above indicate, many Christians today don’t know their Bibles.  Increasingly, they don’t hold to even the most basic historical Christian beliefs.  Are your children being trained to think like Christians?

What is a biblical worldview?  And do you and your children have one?
