Interior design may be one part inspiration and 99 parts perspiration, but that inspiration sure is important! I love looking at the designs of brilliant Dallas Interior designers, as well as those from around the country and world. I also like finding inspirational design quotes to motivate me in my work. Here are five I hope you’ll love, too.
1. “A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” — Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
Most people make the mistake of going overboard in the direction of “stuff.” If one vase is good, why not five? In fact, the ability to edit a space is key to making it look well balanced. A talented interior designer knows that when a design feels finished, it could probably benefit from one more pass with the “editing eye.”
2. “The details are not the details. They make the design.” — Charles Eames
So many elements create successful design: color, texture, scale, and more. Every one of the parts contributes to the whole. Would the living room above look the same without the styled bookcase? Its light blue background? What about the pillows on the chair? These smaller details add a polished look of completion to a space and really make the design, just like it says in the quote above.
3. “Kitchens should be designed around what’s truly important — fun, food, and life.” — Daniel Boulud
A beautiful kitchen is only as good as its function. What good would this space be if it couldn’t host a Thanksgiving dinner, football watching party, or offer plenty of functionality for creating a wonderful meal? This means thoughtful seating arrangements, great flow, plenty of storage, clean lines of sight, and appropriate materials that allow for all this to happen. When a designer can make it beautiful, too, then it’s a big success.
4. “Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication.” — William Gaddis
Like the de Saint-Exupéry quote above, this expresses the idea that more is not necessarily better. I’ve found this so true over the years as an interior designer. Clean lines, strong design choices, and a thoughtful, curated aesthetic create the most memorable spaces. That philosophy of simplicity makes for sophistication, too, and a look that won’t go out of fashion with ever-changing trends.
5. “Do not keep anything in your home that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” — William Morris
Useful or beautiful (or both!) are excellent traits for deciding if something should be in your home. It allows people to take a realistic look at what’s in their space and if it really belongs there. For example, are you hanging onto something you don’t like out of guilt (perhaps you spent a lot of money on it but ended up regretting the decision or are just tired of the item)? Let it go! If clutter is a problem, use this mantra as a guiding force for change.
