I’ve been paying close attention all year long to the trajectory of certain Interior design trends, and I’m loving the direction I’m seeing. There is a lot of emphasis on the comfortable, cozy home, a place of refuge and psychological warmth. So I’m seeing a lot of elements trending to create that feel in the home. I’m also seeing references to the past in furniture, and some other exciting things. Read on to see my 2017 interior design trends predictions.
The past few years, we’ve seen a lot of rustic chic headboards. They certainly add a lot of visual interest, but they’re not particularly comfortable (splinters, anyone?). Enter the upholstered headboard. I’m seeing some interesting textures in the fabrics, and comfort first, always. These can be tailored and sleek, like the one pictured above from a recent job of mine, or a bit more fully stuffed with diamond tufting.
Modern Furniture With Retro Inspiration
The 1960s and 1970s are coming back in a big way in 2017. This means furniture with lines that echo that era, updated with a modern edge, like in the photo above. Retro chandeliers are also a big trend hitting its stride next year: think atomic era sparkles, clean lines, and an edgy look.
Natural Elements Used in Unexpected Ways
Rustic is still a big buzzword in interior design, but expect to see a slight twist on it in 2017. People will be wanting natural elements in their interior design, but used in unexpected ways. One example is pictured above, from a bathroom I designed: an accent wall with wood squares extending all the way from the counter to the ceiling. I’m also predicting a more polished take on rustic, with less “rough hewn” and more of a polished and smooth look.
Soft, Soothing Color Palettes
A few weeks ago, we looked at the color trend predictions for 2017. From Poised Taupe to Byzantine Blue, the predictions are for soft colors used in the home. I see a lot of grays still dominating design choices, and overall soothing colors. So for 2017, expect to see interior design trends toward pastels and neutrals, all used in a way to bring a sense of serenity to interior spaces.
My last prediction is for the emergence of cozy nooks into designs in a big way. These can be as simple as an upholstered ottoman tucked in a corner with a warm throw, pictured above, to an arrangement of cushy seats and sofas with lots of pillows and blankets. This interior design trend speaks to the desire for comfort and calm in the home.
