When we think of a room transformation, we usually think of major updates. This time, we only needed some fresh paint and new decor for our quick DIY Dining room makeover.
This dining room in our new home was originally a deep red shade all over. The red wasn’t terrible but we thought the space could use a softer, calmer shade. It is also time for fall, so I (Dejene) wanted to make it cozy for the upcoming holidays with fall decor. (By the way, you can skip down to the bottom if you want to see the list of items we used in this makeover).

The Power of Paint
The most dramatic change in our dining room came with the decision to swap the red walls for a more calming palette. Here’s the before:
It was actually very easy to choose a color this time around. We went with the same green we chose for our office makeover, where we painted the ceiling green. I think it’s safe to say that olive is our color this year! Specifically, Sherwin Williams’ “Retreat” which is a shade of green that somehow feels both calm and bold. It was perfect choice for creating a serene backdrop that still had enough personality to make a statement.
To keep the room from feeling too saturated in the color, we decided to paint the area below the chair rail in Sherwin Williams “Oyster White”. This contrast was just enough to create a soft balance with the rich green above.
Seasonal Updates
Honestly the paint alone would have been enough for us but we also decided to move the artwork and decor around to give it a refresh for the upcoming fall season. We will likely host a few gatherings as we normally do each year so we wanted our dining room to be inviting and cozy.
We started by adding a few fall-themed accents to the room. I placed a centerpiece of pumpkins, white sunflowers and candles on top of a striped table runner. You’ll also notice there are no actual table setting on the table (plates, forks, napkins, etc) and that’s because we have a busy toddler!
On the other hand, on the hutch, we added a vase we purchased from a local pottery festival and some other pieces from either yard sales or Hobby Lobby.
For the window treatments, we bought new grayish DKNY curtains from Wayfair. The fabric had a soft, linen-like texture in a neutral tone that nicely complemented the color scheme. The black finish curtain rods were also from Wayfair matched the black chandelier that was left from the previous owner of the home. We installed the curtains along the sides of the window to allow the most amount of natural light to filter into the room when the blinds are open.
Personal Touches
The classic dining room table was passed down from Joshua’s childhood home. It’s true what they say, they just don’t make furniture the way they used to, because this table is in nearly perfect shape after decades of use. I’m not a fan of cherry wood, but it was important that we incorporate sentimental heirloom furniture especially when it’s in such great shape! Each piece can tell a story and we love the sense of history and tradition they bring to our home.
We also took this opportunity to hang some cherished artwork from Joshua’s dad who was an artist. Each piece carries a meaning from a special time and space and make the room feel even more personal and inviting.
Last but certainly not least is the enormous china cabinet and cherry wood hutch that was also left behind by the previous owner. We’re still not sure how they even got the china cabinet in the house because the door frames were even too small to bring our refrigerator in the house when we moved. Either way, both are very solid pieces of furniture and we are most likely going to keep them exactly as they are.
To give a modern refresh to the classic furniture and artwork, we bought these modern beige chairs from Wayfair.
Shopping with LTK
Throughout our Diy Dining room makeover, we carefully selected pieces that would enhance the room without overwhelming it. We wanted each item to serve a purpose, whether it was functional, decorative, or sentimental.
If you’re interested in some of the pieces you see in this room, you may find it on our LTK page. We’ve made it easy for anyone interested to recreate this look in their own home, with links to the exact items we used. If you don’t see the item in our LTK, then mostly likely it was a secondhand item.
