The History Behind Chatham’s Resort Hotels

Hotel Chatham People have flocked to some of Cape Cod’s most elegant hotels and resorts for generations. Some of Chatham’s finest properties are sadly now part of Cape history, but others still stand for future generations to enjoy. Hotel Chatham Crews first broke ground on Hotel Chatham in the late 1800s. The three-floor hotel overlooked Pleasant Bay and the nearby beach was a big part of its appeal. The property also brought in a bowling alley, bath houses and a horse stable. Eventually, though, the hotel’s remote location and financial woes led to its demise. The hotel never reopened, and it was eventually demolished around 1910. The property the hotel once stood on has since been turned into the Eastward Ho Country Club. The old hotel once rose up around the fourth hole fairway. Chatham Beach Hotel  The late 1800s was also when the Chatham Beach Hotel first came to life. It was constructed close to the Chatham Life Saving Station. Guests arrived by train, stagecoach, rowboat, then horse and buggy. At the time, the hotel was promoted as a hunting and beach destination. Eventually, however, erosion left its mark. Despite moving the inn back from the water a couple of times, a violent storm ended up destroying the building for good by the turn of the century. Chatham Bars Inn First opened in 1914, Chatham Bars Inn was a true Cape Cod destination for wealthy Bostonians. This award-winning inn began as an elegant hunting lodge. Overlooking Aunt Lydia’s Cove, the inn featured such luxuries as private bathrooms and saltwater baths. The inn also offered recreation, like tennis and a golf course, plus access to fishing, sailing and hunting. Over the years, the inn has hosted such prominent people as William Rockefeller and Henry Ford. In more recent years, the inn underwent a $100 million renovation project, completely updating and redesigning the property’s cottages, rooms, restaurants and more.
