We all want our homes to look and be the best they possibly can, but more often than not we don’t want to pay through the roof prices for it. We spend so much of our time working that we don’t even feel like we have time to do a bit of DIY, never mind when we want to get started on several home improvements at a time.
However, there’s always a solution. Here are a few easy home improvement ideas that are easy and not too time consuming, that even those who hate DIY can make.
Grab a Tin of Paint
No matter how well decorated your home is, it gets to a point where it’s been the same colour for so long that it becomes boring to look at. Before even looking at what handywork needs doing, re-evaluate the walls of your home and consider whether or not you can improve the room by painting the walls alone – it’ll save you a lot of time and effort. Don’t bother hiring a professional – just make sure you cover all of your floors and furniture and make an afternoon of it! Get a friend, partner or family member to help you, stick on some music and you’re good to go. Neutrals colours are ideal to go for in this situation, because even though the colour is plain itself it gives you free reign to accessorise however you please. Because of the freedom you get with neutral tones, it’s pretty difficult to get bored of them. After all, it’s a lot easier to switch up some accessories than it is to paint an entire room. Thinking ahead is key!
Change Your Old Front Door
Your front Door is the first thing that people will see when they come to visit you, and will give them an initial impression of your overall home. It’s not too difficult to replace and fit a new door if you follow simple instructions that often come with the door or watch a tutorial online.
Freshen Up the Kitchen
You don’t have to undergo a complete renovation to make your kitchen look brand new. If your cupboards are looking tired, consider repurposing them yourself. All you have to do is thoroughly clean them, sand them and then paint them. Failing this there are several different sticky back plastic coverings you can get to easily stick over your cupboard doors. These are cheap, effective and will freshen up the kitchen completely.
Don’t Forget the Guest Rooms!
Although it’s very tempting to only focus on the rooms you actually use, consider upgrading your guest rooms so they’re ready whenever you’re expecting company. The most important thing about guest rooms, other than their cleanliness, is the comfort level of the bed. If the bed in your guest room has been there for several years and the mattress is well used, chances are Replacing it could be a good idea. However, we don’t always have the spare cash to replace a mattress entirely. You could look into replacing your guest room’s mattresses with an air mattress instead, and to ensure it’s still of optimum comfort, consider getting pads for your air mattress. This is a much cheaper alternative to buying all new mattresses and will still provide a good level of comfort for your guests. A win-win situation!
Get Some New Hardware
Similarly, like the kitchen situation, replacing all of the doors in your home would cost a bomb in both time and money. Instead, consider replacing all of the doorknobs with shiny new ones. It’s cheap, it’s easy and it looks more effective than you’d think. The same goes for any cabinets you have within the house. If they’re looking a bit tired, it’s far easier and less expensive to replace their handles than it is to replace all of the cabinets in your house. Unless you go for handles made out of expensive materials, it’s particularly cost effective and ideal if you’re on a budget.
Pressure Wash the Exterior of Your Home
Last but certainly not least, don’t neglect the exterior of your home. If you’re going to get a new front door, you don’t want the rest of the house letting the aesthetic down by looking grubby around the edges! A high velocity spray of water will do just the trick and remove any dirt and debris that has gathered on the outside of your home over time. It’s not an investment, it’s not a ton of money, and it’ll make the outside of your home sparkle!
