South Waterfront Updates: November 2017

The South Waterfront of Portland gives PDX-ers the best of many worlds. We at Osprey should know – it’s the neighborhood we call home. This area is not only a perfect blend of urban and natural settings, but also a great spot for both relaxing or being active. Plus, it’s ideal for both individuals and families.

What is even more incredible about the South Waterfront is that it’s still expanding. There are so many new and awesome developments, new restaurants, and new experiences happening in our neck of the woods, we know it can sometimes be hard for people to keep track of them all. Luckily, we have the skinny on what’s happening, and what you can expect in the future in Portland’s South waterfront.

New OHSU Projects for the South Waterfront of Portland

As one of the top healthcare providers in the nation and the largest employer in the Rose City, OHSU is vital to Portlanders. And, Osprey and South Waterfront District residents are fortunate enough to have it right in their backyard. OHSU is in the midst of two major projects that are going to bring more cutting-edge health services to Portland and the South Waterfront:

Knight Cancer Institute Research Building

As of July 2017, this project is in its second phase. When completed in 2018, a 320,000 square-foot, seven-story research facility will serve the South Waterfront in Portland. It will house top cancer doctors and researchers who will be working on finding ways to detect cancer as early as possible.

Here’s a video that describes the Knight Institute’s future plans: https://youtu.be/K1AQWAwCxgs

The Center for Health & Healing South

*iThis new health care facility project broke ground in April 2016 and is expected to open in 2019. It will encompass a wide variety of services including lab facilities, a retail pharmacy, and surgical and clinical spaces for the Knight Cancer Institute and Digestive Health Center and Preoperative mage from Next Portland

Medicine Clinic.

The Zidell Yards Revitalization

Many Portlanders are quite familiar with the Zidell Family. For over 100 years, they’ve been a staple in Portland’s ship dismantling, and barge construction and leasing industries. Zidell Yards in the South Waterfront of Portland has long been the site of the Zidell’s maritime businesses, but that won’t be the case for long. Zidell Yards launched their last barge in June, which means a redevelopment project is now underway. Here are the end goals of the large revitalization that is expected to last two years:

  • Environmental cleanup with plans to plant trees and shrubs, and improve wildlife habitats
  • Converting over 30 acres into a mixed-use development (shops, parks, restaurants, a hotel, a public plaza, and residential and commercial structures)
  • Creating a launch area into the Willamette River for marine and recreational use

The Green Loop in the South Waterfront of Portland

The Green Loop plan proposes a 6-mile linear park with plenty of green space as well as pedestrian and biking paths. The goal is to reduce the City’s carbon footprint and provide connections to the Willamette River and neighborhoods outside of the Central City area. In addition, it will link all of the Central City Districts. Just in case you’re unfamiliar with what those are, here is a list:

  • Downtown
  • West End
  • Goose Hollow
  • The Pearl
  • Old Town/Chinatown
  • Lower Albina
  • Lloyd District
  • Central Eastside
  • South Waterfront
  • University District/South Downtown

It’s an exciting time for the South Waterfront in Portland and we couldn’t be more thrilled about it! The District is a perfect complement to Osprey’s thriving apartment community. The South Waterfront Greenway and Willamette River are just minutes from us, which inspired amenities like bike storage, and an outdoor storage and gear room. Also, the gorgeous views of Ross Island and the Willamette make our Eastside Terrace Courtyard the optimal spot for entertaining, lounging, or just getting a breath of fresh air. Moreover, other features including a Lobby Lounge, a well-appointed Community Lounge, and apartments that boast modern yet warm and inviting aesthetics, provide our residents with a seamless transition from the outside world into a comfortable and convenient living space.
