Lets drive through Yosemite

Oh, how I love Yosemite.

I missed my Fall visit to Yosemite this year. (actually, it's been at least 3 years)

I like going this time of the year because there are not a lot of people there - the valley floor is quiet...

This was taken about 3 years ago - I miss it.

Usually, this is packed with tourists.

Join me - as we enter Yosemite from the Eastern Sierra side -

We had spent the night at the Marine Corp Mountain Training Center right outside Yosemite. They have excellent accommodations. When we used to travel, we always stayed on military bases if they were close to our destination. It's fun eating in the mess hall with the troops.

We always say we're going to hike around and take more time to stay and explore -

but Yosemite is calling...

There is usually snow on the eastern Sierras by this time.

Starting to see the rugged terrain of Yosemite.

Just have to get up and over before we'll see some sunshine...

Ahh, there it is.

The trees had not begun turning yet - but the grasses were turning.

We drive past many points of interest -

On our way down to the valley floor

From inside the van -

When you come out on the other side, the view is spectacular!

The Tunnel View.

Half Dome in the distance.

It has become the premier place to Rock climb.

The area that was to become the Sierra Nevada once lay beneath a sea at the west margin of North America. The rock that was formed on this sea floor from deposited silt. mud and marine organisms were subsequently lifted above sea level and flexed into a mountain range surmounted by a chain of volcanoes much like today's Cascade Range. Granite that formed from molten rock at the roots of these volcanoes eventually would remain as the core of the Sierra Nevada after the overlying sedimentary and volcanic rock gradually weathered and eroded away.

Looks like a nice place to grab a glimpse of this ancient rock and tree growing out from it.  Thanks to my husband, for this photo.

One of my favorite places -

I used to have a black and white of this - a photo that my dad took of us back in 1959. We were having a picnic; it was Fall. I was 5 and my sister was 6 months old. Not a lot of people then, either which is probably why I love Yosemite in the Fall.

I have looked and looked for this photo - I just am unable to find it.  It's funny though how memories have been etched into my mind as if it was a photo.

I loved this guy! Stood there is so regal for me.

Yosemite Valley is diverse with more than 400 species of grasses and wildflowers and thousands of species of insects having been identified there. The valley can be classified as a dry yellow pine forest with a number of large open meadows.

El Capitan

Half Dome to the side.

The only negative of visiting Yosemite in the Fall is it could be hit-and-miss on the waterfalls.

The absolute best time for the waterfalls is spring. I haven't been there in the spring since I was a teenager. Maybe it's time...the spring weather is so fickle though.

Yep, a pretty spectacular place.

We ended up staying the night in a campground just outside the park. It's a half days drive for us - but with just being there and walking around, we didn't want to make the trip back home.

You have to ALWAYS make reservations at Yosemite.

I'm afraid it is a bit too late to get up there - with rain in our forecast tomorrow, and snow in the higher elevations, many roads in the park are now closed for the season.

Maybe...just maybe we'll make it up there this Spring.
