Nor Easter first entry... Tues 1_19_2016

Alrighty then... Let's talk a bit birds and then possible future weather...

As the graph below shows, it looks like this weekend may be a doozy, and we'll get to that... But first, this is how we "Nor' Easter'-ize" our birds. (Somewhere, one of my English profs is sticking pins in a CCA-like doll.) Here's a snapshot:

  • Keep the feeders clean and full
  • Keep the birdbaths clean and full... AND keep the ice out! (We use heaters...)
  • Keep the suet supply rolling. Nothing says warmth to a cold bird like rendered fat
  • Are you ready to dig out the feeders??? (And where's that piece of wax you use to slick the blade of the snow shovel?)
  • Do you have sufficient blizzard garb?
  • How about backup feed?
You get the idea...

On to the weather forecast and the graph pic!

That doesn't look good... Let's take the image apart a piece at a time focusing on Sat, 1/23, and Sun, 1/24...

  1. Note the two red vertical lines. (I put them in there...) Line 1 shows a barometric pressure of roughly 30.2 in., while line 2 indicates 29.4 in... That's a sizeable drop in pressure... Uh oh...
  2. How about that pointy line? That indicates wind direction and speed (30 mph and up), and says "Nor' Easter"
  3. The block area is predicting ~80% chance of snow
  4. Right now, the soothsayers are seeing about six inches of white (though the blowing will no doubt add thrill to the mix...)
  5. Look for peak nastiness around early Sunday... That coincides nicely with the wandering red temperature line: 36 degrees. Can you say howling slush?
Obviously, we're a ways off, but best to be ready... More on this next time...

Battening down by the feeders...
