Lamborghini Urus will be the fastest and the most powerful ever produced crossovers, said Maurizio Redzhiani, the director of Research and Development of the Italian automaker, during the interview with Motoring.
Currently, the fastest crossovers are Bentley Bentayga and Porsche Cayenne Turbo S – both these cars reach to “hundreds” in 4.1 seconds. According to Redzhiani, Urus will exceed them in the near future by reaching to 100 km/h in at least 4 seconds: “Urus will have no rivals… It will create a new segment,” said the R&D chief.
In order to achieve this ambitious goal, Urus should be lighter than Bentayga and Cayenne, but it is unclear, how the Lamborghini crossover will lose some weight. Of course, the aluminum-steel MLB 2 platform could be modified using carbon-fibre components, which are widely used in the design of Audi Q7. Urus will be based on that platform, but the thing is that Bentayga also uses the same platform. Apparently, the Italians still have a secret solution: according to rumors, Urus turned out to be noticeably lighter than Bentayga (2422 kg) and Cayenne Turbo S (2235 kg).
As for the power, it is already known that the crossover will use a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 from Audi (and later a hybrid engine will be offered), but Maurizio Redzhiani said that the Italian model will be tuned specifically for the Urus and will also have a different exhaust note to make it worthy for Lamborghini. No exact figures, but the R&D boss assured that the performance of Urus will have more than 608 hp and 900 Nm, offered by the Bentayga.
The production-ready Urus will debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 2018. Special exterior changes compared with the 2012 concept are not expected, but the company boss Stephan Winkelmann said that the Urus will provide more interior space than the concept car. So, most likely, some changes in forms and proportions of the car will still be there.
