Echo and modern grid quilting: how these make Magic Mushrooms the star!

In my last post I completed the straight line applique of the marvelous mushrooms and today I’ll finish the quilting with some simple but effective machine quilting.

After you complete the applique, press your Table Runner and make sure to check the back for any bunching or puckering. The beauty of using Banyan Batiks Daisy Chain fabrics is that they’re smooth and not prone to bunching or distorting, however, it’s always easier to address any problems you may have now than later!

If you’re happy with the applique stitching, you’re ready to add some modern grid quilting to your table runner.

Setting your stitch length between 2.6 and 3.0 (slightly longer than the applique stitch) start by adding a simple line in the middle of each square, both horizontally and vertically. Then using those lines as guides continue to quilt straight lines across the table runner. You may mark the lines on your table runner using your preferred method or use painters tape to mark your line and stitch along beside it. I’m happy to quilt by eye for a smaller piece like this.

Remember not to rush and to regularly check the back of your table runner to ensure everything is going well.

As you add quilting lines you’ll be pleased with the result, in this case, more is better!

Using the completed picture of the table runner at the beginning of this post as a guide, continue to add your quilting lines. You may add as many or as few as you like. The beauty of this more modern and simple approach to machine quilting is that it allows your applique work to be the star of the show!

Finally, you may add one echo quilt line over the tops of the mushrooms and another straight quilting line below them. What you’re wanting to achieve is the same density of quilting across the entire piece. Echo quilting also makes the golden colors of the Daisy Chain fabrics pop!

You may press the quilt at this stage in preparation for trimming and binding which I’ll show you in tomorrow’s post. Join me!
