Did you have a chance to make the Book Lover Placemat I showed you yesterday? That pattern is a very versatile one from which you can make a whole collection of placemats. Northcott’s Letterpress collection is such a cool fabric to make a quick and easy placemat.

Let’s explore how to use 3 more Fabrics from this collection plus some grosgrain ribbon trim to make another book lover’s placemat. I used fabrics 21891-11, 21894-92 and 21893-11 from the Letterpress collection.

Cutting Instructions for 1 placemat

• 1 piece 13½” x about 15″ from each of the 3 fabrics
• Stack the fabrics, one on top of the other and press.
• Cutting through all 3 layers, cut 4 wedges that are 3½” x 4½” at the widest part and 1½” – 2″ at the narrowest part. Try to make different angles on each wedge for more design interest.
• 2 strips 3″ x WOF from a contrasting fabric for binding
• 13″ x 19″ piece for backing

Sewing Instructions

Sew the wedges together, alternating wide and narrow edges. Press seams open.

Layer placemat, batting and backing and pin-baste together.

Use a walking or even-feed foot to sew a ⅜” strip of grosgrain ribbon or similar trim over each seam line. You’ll be quilting the placemat as you sew on the ribbon. I also added some straight line quilting on the wedge sections using a variegated rayon thread for added interest.

Binding

Sew the 3″ Binding strips to make a strip long enough to go all around the placemat. Fold in half and press.

Use a walking or even-feed foot to sew on the binding using a ½” seam. For this placemat, I sewed the binding on the back of the placemat and then folded it over to the right side. Then I machine-stitched the binding in place.
