Yesterday I showed you how to easy it is to get a lot of visual impact using grosgrain ribbon and the Letterpress fabric wedges to make the… Ribbon and Wedges Placemat. Applying the deep red ribbon to the wedges made the quilting simultaneously.
Here’s another Placemat design using one main fabric (21892-11), of the Letterpress collection by Northcott, a contrasting solid and some ⅜” grosgrain ribbon. This placemat has a little pocket on the front that’s perfect for holding a napkin and your silverware!
Cutting Instructions for 1 – 12″ x 18″ placemat
2 – 13″ x 19″ rectangles from print fabric
2 – 3″ x WOF for binding and 1 – 4″ x 12″ from contrasting fabric for pocket
1 – 3¾” x 11¾ ” from light-weight iron-on interfacing for pocket
Press iron-on interfacing to wrong side of pocket fabric.
Press pocket fabric in half to make a 4″ x 6″ pocket. Sew a 4″ strip of grosgrain ribbon or similar trim about 1″ down from the fold.
Baste the pocket on the front of the pocket about 2″ from the right hand side and having the bottom raw edges even.
Sew grosgrain ribbon trim on each side of the pocket, covering the raw edges of the pocket. Sew another piece of ribbon trim about 2″ from the other side of the placemat.
Layer placemat, light-weight batting and remaining 13″ x 19″ rectangle. Pin-baste and then quilt as desired.
Trim the placemat so it measures 12″ x 18″ (or your desired size).
Sew the 3″ binding strips together, end to end, to make a strip long enough to go all around the placemat. Fold in half and press. Using a walking or even-feed foot, sew on the binding using a ½” seam. Fold binding to back and hand-stitch in place.
And like magic, you have another easy placemat made from Northcott’s Letterpress fabrics!
Come back tomorrow and I’ll show you another placemat design using fabrics from Northcott Letterpress collection. This placemat is the Perfect Potluck Placemat – it has extra pockets for carrying plates and cutlery to your next potluck event!
