Revitalash

A few years ago, my poor old Dad was diagnosed with Glaucoma. The Doctor gave him these eye drops to use for the condition. After a few weeks, we began to notice that he had developed eyelashes resembling a pantomime cow. Of course my Dad, not being the type to relish long silky eyelashes, (especially as we were constantly taking the piss out of him and they kept batting against his glasses) went whinging to his Doctor.

The doctor explained to my extremely unimpressed Dad, that the extraordinary lash growth was a side effect of the Glaucoma drops, namely a prostaglandin called Bimatoprost. My Dad refused to let my excited sister and I coat our lids in his eyedrops, so we rooted about on the net and discovered a product called Revitalash which contained the same substance and was touted as a cosmetic product to enhance the lashes. Revitalash however, was at the centre of a furore over the legality of this particular ingredient. A similar product by Jan Marini had been withdrawn from the US market because it too contained Bimatoprost, which, while cleared by the FDA for medical use, had not been cleared for cosmetic use. The FBI had raided a Jan Marini warehouse and impounded all their stock! (Mmm, FBI agents with long dark lashes behind their raybans!) Revitalash were humming and haaing about withdrawing their product, but you could still get it on ebay, which is exactly what we did.

Revitalash is a clear liquid and comes in a tube with a tiny brush fairly identical to that of liquid eyeliner. You apply it the same way to clean dry eyelids, close to the lashline every night. It takes about 6-8 weeks to see any difference, but believe me when I tell you there is a spectacular difference. My lashes grew longer and darker, I could have gotten away without mascara, but why do that when mascara makes them look even longer and thicker? My Sister in San Diego actually had to trim hers because she couldn’t get her sunglasses on properly!

Revitalash was created by a Doctor whose wife had gone through chemotherapy and subsequently lost her hair and lashes. Yes, Revitalash works on eyebrows too, but I don’t care to waste mine there. It works by extending the growth cycle of the lashes. All hair drops out eventually, this little miracle lets your lashes grow longer before they do.

Side effects? It may tingle slightly after application. You may also get a faint darkening of the skin where you apply the product. Apparently it can also turn blue eyes brown, or cause brown pigmentation. None of these things happened to me or Sis. Does it last? After achieving the length of lash you want, you only need to apply once or twice a week to maintain the effect. Stop using it and your lashes will return to their normal length.

This stuff is pricey but worth it. It cost me about £60 on ebay US but there are lots or similar products around now. The product approved for cosmetic use by the FDA is called Latisse, but I believe it’s only available on prescription.

What Sis and I do now is just buy the eyedrops on ebay for around £20. Exactly the same product, for a damn sight less dosh.
