What is Pointillism
Pointillism is an art style using small patterns of colored dots to create an image. The technique was developed by artists Georges Seurat and Paul Signac in 1886 as their art was inspired by the impressionism movement.
Look at all those dots! This entire piece was created just using dots of color layered and overlapped to create color, shape and shade. There’s a number of ways you can use dots to create art. For younger kids, this is a great activity to practice fine motor skills. For older kids, learning color blends, shading and creating images without lines can be fun art challenges.
I’ve created a couple different printable coloring pages you can use to make your own Pointillism Art. After you get the hang of this technique, you can use blank paper and draw your own designs.

Making pointillism art with paint is a ton of fun. You can use any kind of painting tool to make the dots in your art. I like to use paint brushes or q-tips because they soak up the paint really well. You can also try using the eraser at the end of a pencil, sponge brushes or even craft foam. Experiment and have fun with it!
Use watercolors to create pointillism art
Grab a basic kids watercolor set and some q-tips or paint brushes and you can make pointillism art all day! I like to use printable coloring pages and then add color with pointillism.
- Paper or printable – Download my rainbow coloring page
- Paint and Q-tips or paint brush
- Small container of water
Use a paintbrush to apply water to all the paints. You need to make sure the paints are wet enough to pick up color with the cotton swabs. Use the cotton swab to apply color to the paper. Use one swab for each color. Use the rainbow printable to practice placing color in specific areas. First fill each rainbow line with a single color. If you’d like to create some color “blending” overlap different colored dots in each rainbow line.
Use markers to create pointillism art
That set of brightly colored markers is perfect for creating pointillism art with the kids. This is great for marker holding practice and also a fun art activity for kids who have already mastered pen holding skills. I like using markers and pointillism in my own art.
- Paper or printable – download my Heart Coloring Page
- Markers or pens
Simply touch the paper with the tip of the marker to make a small dot. Dots don’t need to be perfect nor spaced specifically, just make dots. To create color blends, add different colors of dots in the same area. If you want create shading, start with lighter colors and layer with darker colors.
