Welcome back to the Scrapbook Sunday Blog Hop featuring a new sketch as I feature the Little Twinkle Stamp Set and Twinkle Twinkle Designer Series Paper. I do love having a sketch to use as they are a great way to create a quick scrapbook page or even several cohesive pages. If you love to scrapbook but find it a struggle, then using a sketch is a great place to start.
Today, let us talk a little about journaling! I really struggled with the Journaling on today’s scrapbook page. At one point, I actually considered only using a quote and not doing any of my own journaling. The page really didn’t NEED any journaling. But, there were words and ideas floating around in my head that I really wanted to be reflected in the scrapbook page. So… on that note, let’s get started!
JOURNALING: TELLING A STORY!

Does Journaling scare you? When you sit down to write a piece of journaling for a scrapbook page, does your mind go blank? I can definitely say yes to both of these questions. Here I am… An English Major, blogger and even I get brain freeze when I sit down to add journaling to my scrapbook pages. Heck, I still have some scrapbook pages from 20 years ago that don’t have any journaling on them yet there is space that I’ve left blank so some journaling can be added. To help you overcome the fear or mental block caused by journaling, here are some great tips:
- Keep in mind that there is NO right or wrong way to add journaling to a scrapbook page!
- Struggling to express your thoughts or tell the story behind the photos, consider using a famous quote.
- Better yet, use a personal quote.
- Write down the first 10 words that come to mind when looking at your photo(s)!
- Use the word dump you just created to create a bullet list as your journaling.
- Interview the person or people in the photo and use that as your journaling.
- Don’t be afraid to ask others to contribute to the journaling on a page.
- Do you use a calendar? Consider keeping notes from the days’ event that you can then refer back to when you scrapbook your photos.
- Use your creativity… Consider filing a report to explain the event being scrapbooked.
- Write a poem to express your feelings about the photo or event.
- Keep in mind that you want to evoke strong feelings in your writing.
This is just a short list of ideas on how to get started with adding journaling to your scrapbook pages. Also, on occasion, it is OK to not add ANY journaling (except maybe for the date). There are also times that you just need to walk away but don’t forget to come back and finish the story.
Little Twinkle Scrapbook Page with Journaling!
This page evokes so much feeling for me. Caleb and I were enjoying a parade in Belle Plain, MN. Sitting on the curb with Caleb was fun and on this day it was a carefree moment. The weeks prior we were dealing with a family medical need. As I look at this photo and knowing the events leading up to it, I really just wanted to focus on my thoughts. My goal was to get some of my key feelings down on paper.
I pretty much always type my journaling on the computer. It’s easier for me to actually cut and paste or add new ideas. Since I was struggling to narrow down my thoughts, I decided to start with a quote. That is when I came across this quote:
“The spirit is there in every boy; it has to be discovered and brought to light.” ~ Robert Baden-Powell
As soon as I found the quote, I KNEW where I needed to start. My journaling needed to be about Caleb but through my eyes. I included some of the quirky little things that we do to show our love for each other. It was also important for me to mention that there are also some daily struggles.
The end product of my journaling is a poem. It expresses the emotions I have tied to this photo. I was able to create a personal expression of how much I love Caleb.
SCRAPBOOK SKETCH AND LAYOUT
I took this months sketch and actually turned it 90 degrees for my page. As I started laying out my pieces of designer series paper, the layout wasn’t coming together for me so as I played around with it I found I really liked how it looked when I changed the direction of the layout. The sketch is really only a “suggestion” and a starting place after all.
Did you notice that I’m not using Whisper White for my base layer? Yes, I did decide to use a sheet of the Twinkle Twinkle Designer Series Paper as the stage for my scrapbook page. While I love using Whisper White for the background, the feeling I wanted to evoke was better suited to the Gray Granite. The photo is also Black & White. I’ve also chosen to add texture by using Shimmer White Embossing Paste mixed with Night of Navy Re-inker.

SUNNYGIRLSCRAPS TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Texture… This month I used the Shimmery White Embossing Paste mixed with Night of Navy Re-inker.
- Subdued Colors! To evoke a pensive, thoughtful feeling for the page, I kept the colors on the page to mostly Granite Gray and Night of Navy.
- The title this month comes directly from the Little Twinkle Stamp Set. It’s the perfect sentiment for the page and how I wanted to express myself.
- Journaling is cut into little strips and added at various angles.
LITTLE TWINKLE SCRAPBOOK PAGE DETAILS:
- I am using Gray Granite Twinkle Twinkle Designer Series Paper as the base layer for the scrapbook page.
- The background for the main portion of the sketch is the Shimmery White Embossing Paste mixed with Night of Navy Re-inker and uses the brick pattern from the Pattern Party Decorative Masks.
- I used a two-step process to create the background. I added the first section of embossing paste but wanted a longer section so after the first section had dried, I laid the decorative mask over the dried section and added more embossing paste.
- Once the embossing paste was dry, I began the process of adding the designer series paper layers.
- The first layer is Gray Granite Stars from the Twinkle Twinkle Designer Series Paper.
- Next, I added the Night of Navy Banner which replaces the tag style piece in the sketch.
- For the third layer, I created a rectangular Stitched Shape piece.
- Finally, I added the long, skinny banner piece.
- Journaling is added next by cutting the printed journaling into strips.
- At the bottom right corner, I stamped the title by using the Stamparatus which guaranteed I would be able to get a very deep and solid stamped image. The title is also heat embossed with clear embossing powder.
- The small strips of Twinkle Twinkle Designer Series Paper were layered next to the title and I carried over the theme from the left side of the page.
- Finally, I added basic rhinestones to the scrapbook page.
