Garage Sale Upcycled Shell Encrusted Mirror

A few weekends ago I got this 24″ mirror at a garage sale for $3.00!  I thought it would be perfect for a Shell Encrusted makeover.

I wasn’t real excited that the frame was black…but the price was right!

Step One:  Completely cover the glass with paper, taping it down occasionally so the paper doesn’t move under the spray paint can pressure.

Step Two:  after the paint is completely dry, experiment with the Shells.  I knew I wanted to use up a bag of white shells that I got at the dollar store, so the bottom and sides were going to be fast to cover, but a little boring.  I wanted the top to be more ornate and unusual.  This was my first design.  It is handy to snap a photo because you can look at the design objectively.  I didn’t like the first design.

I added in two larger shells, but the cone shaped shells got a “NO!”

I liked the dainty line of white shells which defined the shape while decorating it at the same time!

Each shell on the mirror got a dry brushing of white acrylic paint so all the shells were matching.  Most of the time, I bring my creations to one of the local shops to sell, but this one is a keeper!
