After the depressing US election results a little comfort eating was in order. New opening Bedford Street in Collingwood fits the bill with the deep fryer on high rotation along with some classic US dishes.
The restaurant on the corner of Bedford and Johnson street has a prime corner position with big windows letting in the sunshine. There’s a big central bar with a fit out of dark timber with black and gold trim. Booth seating gives a nod to the traditional American diner without straying into theme park territory.
It’s all day dining here from pancakes in the morning to fried chicken and cocktails in the evening. The must order is Bedford Street’s Fried Chicken Sandwich ($16). The chicken is tender with a crunchy seriously hot coating and served up on soft white bread. Paired with some crinkle cut chips, pickles and a Coke this may just be the perfect election hangover recovery meal.
I can also recommend trying to make sense of a Trump victory over Bedford Street’s thick cut belly bacon topped with fried eggs and a dollop of sauerkraut. It’s seriously artery clogging but hard to resist. My only complaint is the lack of a milkshake on the menu. “I don’t know why we don’t have one”, our waiter admitted and offered a glass of chocolate milk instead which has to be one of the weirder concoctions I’ve seen.
Relief at Bedford Street is only temporary but it’s still worth it.
