GM Levon Aronian is the winner in Gibraltar open 2018.

276 players took part in this tournament. It was traditionally the strongest open around with more then 100 GMs, including many of the top 10.

GM Hikaru Nakamura was leading during the whole tournament and was on course for his 4th straight victory here. But before the last round they were many people with a chance to win it.
With the mathematical possibility of about a 10-way tie for first if none of the leaders could win, only the top four players on performance rating would be through to the playoff. Aronian had a better position against Nakamura in the last round, but only drew. He said he didn’t expect to make it, but the results all came back in his favor. Dubov and Antipov lost, while Wang and Howell drew. After the amazing finish of the tournament 7 players had 7,5 out of 10.
So Nakamura, Rapport, Vachier-Lagrave, Aronian took the four places for the tiebreaks, while Vitiugov, Adams and Le have just missed it.

In the semifinal Aronian proved that sometimes 2 knights are better then 2 bishops in open position against Rapport in the first game. In the second he managed to outplay his young opponent.
Much more drama was in the other semifinal. Hikaru Nakamura against Maxim Vashier-Lagrave. They drew the two 10-minute games. The American had in the first blitz game winning endgame and more time, but he managed to lose for the first time in his last 4 years in Gibraltar. In the second game things also looked good for Hikaru but somehow the Frencman managed to survive.
So in the final Aronian against Vachier-Lagrave.
The pair made two draws in the 10+5, then another in the first 3+2 game. Then finally Lev Aronian managed to break and win the game and the tournament.
