Bloomberg Ranks Rutgers MBA #1 in Job Placement

I was recently announced that Rutgers Business School recently placed first overall on Bloomberg Businessweek’s MBA job placement survey.

Bloomberg’s research indicates that Rutgers MBAs “had higher salaries – $93k to start and $150k 6-8 years in – and less debt – $40k versus the $53k average – than those of the other 87 ranked business schools.

Rutgers MBA Office of Career Management (OCM) Director Dean Vera, who “fell into career management after 12 years in English language and management training,” is modest about OCM’s role in post-grad employment: “Students place themselves. We are here to teach them how to conduct a self-directed job search.”

Vera advises MBA students who start job searches to make sure they can “walk the walk of their chosen career path. If our students can’t answer finance, marketing or Supply Chain Management questions during an interview, which can make up 50 percent of interview questions, then they won’t move to the next round.”

In assessing how Rutgers students can become the country’s best job candidates, Vera responds, “In short, it’s a process. It begins at orientation with the right messaging. Key to that messaging is setting expectations: We’re not a placement office – students place themselves. We are here to teach them how to conduct a self-directed job search. For as many as 70 percent a year, that self-direction begins and ends at OCM as students secure summer internships and full-time positions. For the remainder, they find positions on their own. Either way, we’ve prepared them. The career management program for full-time students and the career management workshop for part-time students kicks it off and then we work one-on-one with students on resume and cover letter writing, interviewing skills and networking.”

According to Rutgers, what separates their MBA from many others is the vast array of available concentrations: analytics & information management, entrepreneurship, finance, global business, marketing, pharmaceutical management, marketing research & analytics, real estate, strategy & leadership, supply chain management, and technology innovation and entrepreneurship.
