The Importance of Showing Up

Dear Kid,

Some people always show up.

There could a monsoon inside a hurricane inside snowmageddon inside a nuclear disaster and they’d still show up. They could cut off their left arm (or break it falling down a flight of stairs) and suffer from the Bird Flu and they’d still show up.

My friend Laine has an Employee who does not fit the above description. At all. In any way. The employee (we’ll call her “Employee”) seems to be the unluckiest person on the planet. Her car has a problem; her son is sick; she got bitten by something and is having some sort of reaction; her doctor’s appointment was rescheduled; her mother is in the hospital…the list is looooong.

We don’t think Employee is lying. Well, at least Laine doesn’t think Employee is lying. After all, Employee has never (that we know of) been hit by a meteorite or turned into a werewolf. But Employee is close to being renamed ExEmployee.

“Should we get Employee involved in this project?” said no one ever. “Should we promote Employee?” said the exact same no one.

Yes, you should do the best you can. You should work hard. You should learn. You should be the best you ever.

And it starts with Showing up.
