Fake News is a Real Problem

Dear Kid,

I have had it with this (faux)idea of fake-news.

It’s not an oxymoron (although it is moronic); it’s just plain ridiculous (and not in the rolling around laughing so hard I can’t breathe sort of way).

Let’s be clear:

There is fact. There is Opinion. There is satire, there is comedy, there is fiction. And there are lies.

More importantly, we need to be Clear about which is which. In the newspaper (remind me to explain to you what that is), news is labeled “news” and opinions are labeled “opinions”.

The Onion clearly labels itself as “A farcical newspaper featuring world, national and community news.”

And when facts are wrong, people and the media should say, “Um, no, that’s wrong” without fear of reprisals or death threats.

We all learned this when we were kids—remember the story about the Emperor and His New Clothes?

If there aren’t any clothes, we need to say so.

(And if there are clothes, we need to look for matching shoes.)

Love, Mom
