Five Reasons to study a Hospitality, Leisure, & Tourism Degree

Hospitality, Leisure, & Tourism may have one of the longest names of all the subjects you can study at university, but don't let that put you off. While most degrees won't include all four aspects of this subject, many courses will combine two or more. So whether you're interested in a Hospitality & Tourism degree, a Leisure course, or anything in between, check out our five reasons to study Hospitality, Leisure, & Tourism at university:
1. The chance to join a rapidly growing industry
Even with the economic crisis that has impacted on many industries in recent years, hospitality and tourism are amongst the fastest growing areas of employment in the world. Some sources estimate that the number of people employed in the industry globally stands at over 100 million, and this doesn't look set to decrease anytime soon. In addition, the rewards for talented and focused individuals are high.
2. There are increasingly few skilled staff in the industry
Despite the huge growth in the Hospitality, Leisure, & Tourism industry, recent reports from some regions have highlighted the lack of skilled staff to fill the vacancies. Perhaps the sector is growing so fast that it's creating jobs it can't suitably fill, but either way, having a degree in the subject can only be a good thing. If employers are struggling to find individuals with the necessary skills and education to work in the sector, then what better way to impress them than with a relevant undergraduate qualification?
3. Opportunities to travel
The beauty of Hospitality, Leisure,  & Tourism is that no matter where you are in the world, the industry has a place. Whether you choose to work in hotels, events, attractions, or anywhere else in the sector, there are always jobs available to Hospitality, Leisure, Recreation & Tourism graduates. However, it's not just graduates that get the chance to travel. Many university courses offer a year studying or working abroad, providing, even more, opportunities for you to see the world.
4. Transferable skills
Many courses in Hospitality, Leisure, & Tourism, particularly those with a specific focus on management, will encapsulate the learning of business skills. This knowledge can be used in careers far beyond those related to the degree, especially given the degree's focus on service. Service is increasingly important in global markets, so graduates from a highly service-oriented degree are all set to have an immediate advantage over the competition.
5. Combining subjectsWhile it may not always come in the form of a joint honours course, degrees in Hospitality, Leisure, Recreation & Tourism will very often embrace a wide range of other subjects. Archaeology, History, Art and Sport are among the huge number of disciplines that can be taken alongside a degree in this field. Covering multiple subjects in one degree will not only make it more interesting to study, but it will also help you to broaden your knowledge and develop new skills.
