One of the common misconceptions about Meditation is that it needs to be practiced in a quite space to be ‘successful’. Whilst it may be easier for beginners to start practicing in a quiet room, one of the core principles of meditation is that you can perform it anywhere and at any time.
With regular practice you can develop the ability to have a peaceful walk on a busy city street; the key is to be alone with yourself, even if you’re not physically alone. On today’s blog we explain why Walking can be your own kind of meditation.
It gets you moving
One of the hardest aspects of meditation for beginners is restlessness. That is, the inability to remain still or resisting the urge to move to reach an itch or stretch your limbs. Walking takes care of this issue and can be performed almost anywhere.
With walking, you create a rhythm, leaving nothing to focus on but your mind, allowing you to contemplate things in a much clearer and positive way. Furthermore, exercise releases endorphins – the feel good hormone, meaning that it is also beneficial your Mental health.
It connects you with nature
Walking in Nature has been shown to provide a number of physical and mental health benefits. In Japan Shinrin Yoku, or forest bathing, is a common practice of short, leisurely visits to a forest as a way to cultivate calmness and relieve stress.
Not only has walking in nature been shown to reduce stress, it’s also been linked with increased short term memory, sharper thinking and improved concentration and increased productivity. Being in nature reminds us of who we are, of our connection to the world, and can allow us to put our problems in perspective.
Walking gives you distance
Walking allows you to put physical and mental distance between yourself and any problems that may be present in your life. By creating this distance, you give yourself a better chance to clear your mind and return home or to your workplace to tackle the problem.
