How the Mind and Body Benefit from Meditation

Welcome back to the Master Oh blog. Science has provided serious evidence to support the positive benefits of Meditation and today we examine these benefits.

  1. Brainpower boost

Studies conducted at UCLA have shown that people who meditate regularly have more ‘folding’ in the brain’s cortex; this is believed to promote and enhance neural processing. Crucially, the UCLA studies concluded that the more you meditate, the more the brain develops in this way. This means that long-term meditation could potentially improve decision-making and increase concentration.

  1. Healthy heart

The Maharishi University of Management conducted a study into stress reduction using Transcendental Meditation. They found that heart disease patients were 48% less likely to suffer heart attack, stroke or death if they practiced Transcendental Meditation. The study also found that, over the course of five years, those patients who meditated regularly were 25% less likely to be hospitalised as a result of their condition. Further studies have found that meditation can improve cardiovascular health.

  1. Increased productivity

Researchers at the Universities of Washington and Arizona conducted a study into Mindfulness Meditation. They found that eight weeks of mindfulness meditation training helped managers multi-task and minimisle stress or fatigue. Studies have also shown how mindfulness meditation can also promote productivity and wellbeing in the workplace.

  1. Resourcefulness

Researchers at Leiden University conducted a study into Open-Monitoring Meditation, a form of meditation that allows you to be open to all internal and external sensations. Participants who practiced this mediation showed a dramatic improvement in divergent thinking. This means that they were better at brainstorming, problem solving and thinking ‘outside of the box.’
