This Weekend is unofficially the start of summer as we celebrate the Victoria Day weekend in the sun. After a grueling spring, the sun is finally out in its glory and you should certainly be taking advantage of this beautiful weather we have been enjoying. For many folks, this long weekend will be an extended Vacation as many are travelling to sunny beaches and northern cottages. Whether you’re at tanning on a beach in Cuba this weekend, playing blackjack at a casino in Vegas or relaxing at the cottage up north, there’s no reason to abandon your workout routine. Today, we present 5 ways to exercise while on vacation, ensuring you’re still living a healthy, active lifestyle.
Embrace Your Environment
If you find yourself on a beach this weekend, try running on the sand which is a great alternative from the treadmill. If you find yourself at the cottage then try going for an extended nature walk. Regardless of where you’ve chosen your destination, there are always elements in your environment that will accommodate your workout. Embrace the environment that you’re in and be sure to use it as a break from your everyday routine. If you find yourself in a hotel, perhaps use the gym. Using your environment is a great way to stay in Shape.
Back to the Basics
We understand that your cottage may not be equipped with Kettlebells or a Stairmaster therefore it’s best to alter your workout. Wall sits, squats, pushups and sit-ups are a great way to stay in shape while on vacation. Take a brief moment to find an empty area where you could get a quick strength-based workout; this is great for staying in shape while at a hotel or the beautiful Muskoka cottage.
Before you go on your vacation, take a few minutes to research the destination and surrounding areas because you never know what you may find. For example, there may be a local 5k walk fundraising event that you would be thrilled to join. There may also be a nearby gym that you could utilize, whatever the case may be, doing your homework may help you stay in shape while on vacation.
While we understand that carrying dumbbells in your carry-on isn’t the brightest of ideas, there are certain items you should pack to maintain an active lifestyle while on vacation. Running shoes for example, is a great motivational tool to help you stay in shape. Allocate space in your luggage for workout gear and this will help you stay active during those fun vacation days.
If you’re traveling with a partner, holding each other accountable may be a great motivational technique for exercising while on vacation. Having a few extra treats and consuming a bit more calories is perfectly fine, however, holding yourself accountable is essential to working out while at the cottage or the beautiful tropical destination.
