Podcasting. I tried it. This is what happened.

Podcasting. I tried it. I stank at it. If you’re an oldie in the Podcasting community then you’re about to hear the hilarious tale of a newbie trying to podcast for the (almost) first time.

Today’s blog post was supposed to be an audio post on the subject of staying motivated even when life tosses you under a bus but that didn’t happen because podcasting saw a bus and pushed me off the curb. Or, more accurately, I pushed myself and I’m blaming podcasting for my dimness.

I’m kind of new to the whole casting thing. I did record an audio blog about 16 years ago in mid-2000 and gave it up pretty quickly, but that was recorded on Windows Sound Recorder (ew) and uploaded in .wav format (eww) to my Geocities diary site (eewwww), so I’m basically new to the whole concept of podcasting. But I figured, heck, I don’t have time to do a traditional words-on-page blog post today so I’ll just whip up an audio file, it’ll be fun! How hard can it really be?

Podcasting – how hard can it really be?

Yeah, I’m not ready for this. 1

Turns out? It’s hard. Very hard. And I found myself searching for software and apps, searching for tutorials (I even went to the ‘For Dummies‘ section of Youtube for this) searching for a crappy old headset with a mic because without the mic you can’t understand what I’m saying, and trying to write a little copy to work from. And I did work. For hours.

You might have noticed that this is a traditional, words-on-a-page blog post and there’s no audio in it. Guess who heard their voice for the first time in ages while trying to edit down hours of recording? Me! And guess who refuses to put that up? Me! Oh lord. It’s like taking photos of myself all over again, I’m going to have to get used to it!

I still want to do the podcast thing but I think I need to get comfy with my weird, nasally, sqeakness first. And have a great topic, maybe a Q&A?

I don’t know how to do that just yet, if you have any idea and want to help poor me (or have any questions you’d like me to answer in my next attempt at podcasting), please don’t hesitate to ask! And let me know down in the comments if you’ve ever tried podcasting. Was it hard to get over hearing your own voice? What software and hardware did or do you use? Any tips to make me look way, way better when I finally attempt this again?
