10 Tips to avoid Traction Alopecia: This is curable

Last week a friend of mine was diagnosed with the Hair loss problem – Traction Alopecia. She was scared even to face the mirror, let alone the world. As the doctor said, this could have been avoided if proper hair care had been taken.
Most people today, especially the young, are suffering from traction alopecia and don’t blame the genes. It occurs from certain styling habits, extreme stress and tension.
Hence, I thought of sharing this you so that you can avoid slipping into such a trauma. Let’s understand what traction alopecia is.

Traction Alopecia:

As the name suggests, this is a type of hair loss that occurs due to traction or pulling of hairs. It kills your hair roots leading worse to permanent hair loss.

Causes of Traction Alopecia:

While tight hairstyles are one of the reasons, this doesn’t happen in a day. When this stress on hair continues for months, it results in traction alopecia affecting your frontal hairline and nape of your neck. As initial signs, you would experience small bumps, a little scalp soreness and of course hair breakage. Gradually, the symptoms will move towards thinning of hair to total hair loss.
But relax!
It is completely preventable and curable. Here’s how to prevent this kind of hair loss.

Tips to avoid Traction Alopecia:

1. Skip the tight hairdo habit:

If you love to experiment with tight and stressful hairdo, braids and ponytail, it’s time for a change. Otherwise, this might result in traction alopecia. Make sure whatever hairstyle you sport, that should not be hurting. Because hurting or pain indicates that your follicles are being pulled excessively taking them beyond their safe zone.
You can try braids or ponytails sometimes but not regularly.

2. Change your hairstyle:

It’s better if you vary your style for changing direction of strain caused on your hair roots. The hairs around your temple are quite delicate, so once your follicles are dead for extreme pull, they are dead. You won’t get them back again. So, consider altering your hairstyle regularly. And moreover, choosing the same hairdo regularly is so monotonous, isn’t that?

3. Avoid using hair extensions:

Hair extensions cause extra burden on your hair which is already stressed with your tight style. They put an added weight that damages your hair strands as well as follicles. If you are using glue to bind these extensions, imagine what’s waiting ahead!

4. For your children:

Most mothers tie up their child’s hair tightly. Stop using elastic ponytail holders or if they are metallic pieces even. Try out some gentle styles for them like French braids or twists.

5. Using Chemicals? Be careful

Besides your hairstyle, chemicals are often the reason for causing traction alopecia. You think you can blindly rely on your home relaxer kit. Let a professional treat your hair with straightening chemicals for they know the proper methods and exact formula. Again, if you keep that relaxer or chemicals for longer period, none can help your hair from damage.

6. Hair colours? Not frequently atleast:

No! Don’t take me wrong. I am not telling you to stop using hair colours. Do use but not frequently. Hair dyes also contain bleaches that are enough to take away the moisture from your lovely locks. They ultimately become brittle, further leading to traction alopecia.

7. Watch your sleep:

Do you sleep wearing those hair pins, curlers or roller sets? Be careful, that can take away your hair, leaving you with nothing to style. Avoid this habit immediately.

8. Using sprays?

You may use gels or sprays on your hair, but make sure that you don’t brush them when dry to remove that gel. Not sure whether the gel will come out or not, but your hair certainly will.

9. Don’t use stressful accessories:

Some people wear hats or cap that fit on their head tightly. Guess what, this will affect your hair line putting maximum stress.

10. Walk the natural route:

Yes, it’s good to walk the natural route. Sometimes, let your hair be natural and free, dancing with the rhythm of the breeze. Keeping them natural would also give time to heal.
