In case of tooth loss, or even instead of traditional dentures, it is worth thinking about dental implants. In such cases the question arises among the first questions is whether the Implant is durable, how long will it stay in place? Will be a replacement necessary, or if it has once been placed, will we have nothing more to do with it?
You can learn from our article the following:
- Why is an implantation recommended?
- How should we choose – and which implant?
- How long does a treatment with implantation take?
- What happens if after the implantation the implant falls out?
- If the implant is well ossified, will it remain placed forever?
- How should we take care of the places implants, so that they are long-lasting?
Why is an implantation recommended?
In contrast to the other dental restorations, the adjacent teeth do not have to be prepared, if one chooses Implantation. The original chewing ability can be restored in a given area to 95% again and bone loss can be prevented. Digestion will be thorough, the appearance will be more aesthetic and thus the patient can be confident again. The implanted teeth can be under proper care equivalent to the own, natural teeth.
How should we choose – and which implant?
There are about 220 implant types on the market; it is worth not to only choose on a price basis. Dr. László Mozsolits recommends that you listen to your dentist, and to choose what he proposes, there are some in the high middle category, which are of high quality. Since the implants are made of titanium, no rejection or allergic reactions have to be feared. Not every patient is suitable for a dental implantation; there are general contraindications such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, especially if they are not treated. Also, smoking has to be mentioned, as it results in slower blood circulation in both the bone and the mucosa, and thus the chances of recovery are lowered. In addition, the lifetime of the implants is shortened. Under the age of 18, implantations are not performed as the jaws are still in development. According to the Dr., patients with unstable psyche – such as panic patients, or patients who suffer from depression – the operation should not performed, because they often have unrealistic expectations regarding the results, which could lead to other psychological problems.
How long does a treatment with implantation take?
In the first round, it is examined whether the patient has a sufficient quality and quantity of bone mass. Should this not be the case, a bone augmentation is needed, which prolongs the duration of treatment to six months. Only after that can be the implant placed, which effectively replaces the tooth root. Without bone augmentation, the treatment requires about three months. Now the final replacement can be manufactured: The implant is exposed, an impression is taken and the replacement is manufactured in the dental technical laboratory. There are many replacement possibilities, from bridges to telescopic dentures.
What happens if after the implantation the implant falls out?
Do not be afraid: Only in a small percentage of a properly prepared implantation happens something. When for some reason the body is not responding well to the implant, it may happen that an inflammation occurs in the affected area and the removal of the implant may be necessary. Once the affected bone has healed, there is the possibility of a re-implantation.
If the implant is well ossified, will it remain placed forever?
The first implantation was in the sixties and remained in the mouth of a Swedish patient for 41 years; until his death. While there is no lifetime warranty, but with proper oral hygiene, a healthy diet, avoidance of smoking and alcohol and having a regular dentist check, we can preserve the implants for a long time. Our patients get a warranty of 10 years on their implants.
How should we take care of the places implants, so that they are long-lasting?
The dental hygiene requires great care also after implantation, since an inadequate oral hygiene can cause inflammation, so the implant can loosen. After surgery, the patients are taught how to brush their teeth and shown how they have to use the various cleaning equipment for the teeth replacements. We also recommend a regular check-up. The onto the implant built replacement behaves in the mouth the same as natural teeth in a certain way and therefore the following points are (again) recommended:
- Thorough brushing
- Daily cleaning of the gaps
- Check-ups every half year
- Smoking cessation
Patients should know that they face a lengthy and costly process, but if they comply with the discussed and instructions from the doctor, they can preserve the replacement teeth for many years.
