Meditations and Herbs to Overcome Grief

Grief, like all emotions, shifts and changes over time. According to Chakra theory and Chinese acupuncture meridian theory, we hold grief in our lungs.

The best way to release grief is thru deep breathing exercises. More than any other organ, the Lungs are concerned with the present, with living in the moment. The act of breathing represents the link between us and the world from the moment we are born, right up to our “last breath”. Ensuring an adequate intake of air and correct breathing will help us maintain this connection with the world alive, and healthy. All that is needed is to practice deep breathing and to access fresh air.

Here is a very simple exercise you can try right now.
-- Inhale really slowly, expand your abdomen allowing it to fill with air, then expand your chest to its maximum capacity without straining yourself. Stop for a few seconds and then start exhaling slowly allowing your chest to come back to its normal position and emptying your abdomen by contracting it gently. Stop for a few seconds and repeat for up to 5 minutes. Doing this on a daily basis can improve your Lung energy and your ability to live in the now.

Deep breathing not only aids the oxygenation of every cell but returns us to the present moment where all the frustrations and resentments from the past do not exist, and where all the anxiety and fear about the future are irrelevant. Through deep breathing we discover that there is only NOW to be experienced.

In the language of flowers, Marigold means "sorrow". Marigold (Calendula) can help us through times of grief and depression, be an ally as we heal ancestral wounds, and be a talisman for good luck and positive energy!

Marigold is sometimes described as "the flower of grief."
-Tea Tip: Store the dried petals in airtight jars and have them ready to use in tea mixtures at the rate of 1/2 teaspoon per cup.

The following Herbs can help to strengthen lung qi:

Astragalus has been in use in Chinese medicine for about 2000 years. It is one of the Chinese tonic herbs, called this due to its positive effect and because you can take it every day without this impacting you negatively.

This herb is known to strengthen your resistance to infections and it will help you to deal with on-going stress.

It can be taken by itself or combined with turmeric.
Astragalus is a great Lung Qi tonic and you should definitely give it a try.

Regular use of Ginseng helps protect the spleen and lungs. Ginseng is considered a powerful, adaptogenic herb. It has properties that treat a broad spectrum of diseases. Benefits from using ginseng are cumulative. Taking the herb for several months to a year (with weekly breaks every two months) is much more effective than short term doses. Ginseng offers long term mental and psychological benefits. It is good for depression, assists the memory process, improves concentration, and brings about alertness.
Roots may be chewed or made into tea. Ginseng may also be purchased in capsule form for use in herbal medicine.
* After using ginseng regularly for a couple of months, discontinue use for two weeks. Do not use ginseng with caffeine. People with high blood pressure should not use ginseng. Do not use ginseng during pregnancy. Always consult with a healthcare professional before taking any herbal remedies especially if pregnant, nursing, or taking other medications.

Sour foods are said to be good for the Lungs so it is a good idea to add a small amounts of sour foods to ones diet. Sour foods include: sauerkraut, olives, pickles, leeks, aduki beans, salt plums, rose hip tea, vinegar, yogurt, lemons, limes, grapefruit and sour varieties of apples, plums, and grapes.

Here is an easy and effective Qigong for lungs
-The Wise Owl Gazes Backward

1. Stand upright, feet together and look to the far distance. 2. Breath in.
3. Turn the head to one side following with eyes to look behind you. Keep the trunk of the body straight.
4. Repeat this head turning routine for both sides. Breathe out when turning, breathe in when returning. For more details on this exercise follow this link The Wise Owl Gazes BackwardYou should perform a minimum of eight sets of this stretch in order to gain the most benefit. This is a helpful exercise that can be performed just about anywhere.

Another effective Qigong Technique is to use The Lung Healing Sound.

-- Sound we use on exhale: sssssssss ( sounds like air out of a tire)

Sit upright on a chair with a straight posture, and feet flat on the floor. Place your hands on your lap with palms facing upward. As you breathe in slowly, lift the palms up to level of your brow and turn your palms outward.

While doing so envision the white light filled with Joy Laughter, Strength and Courage. Smile as you do so. Place your tongue to the upper palate as you breathe in,with shoulders down and fingers wide open.

On the out breath see a grey mist leaving your mouth as you expel the sadness and grief out with the healing sound ‘ssssssss’. Look up over your hands and expel the air over your hands.

As you breathe the healing sound out, slowly bring your arms and hands down to the sides, until your hands are once again upright on your lap. Close your eyes and smile to your lungs, imagining that you are still making the lungs' sound.

Repeat 4 to 6 times Please take your time and be aware of your lungs opening up like a flower! After regular practice, you will notice a heavy feeling lifting off your chest. You will feel lighter and have a greater sense of well being!

Grief Meditation by Leslie Davenport

It's common for people to spontaneously reminisce, envisioning the person they have lost. This valuable inner connection can also be intentionally cultivated. This Meditation is especially appropriate when the relationship was based in love.

Set aside 15 minutes of undisturbed time, and close your eyes. Start with three minutes simply focusing on natural slow breathing while you relax. Then allow an image to arise of a beautiful place -- one that is peaceful and comfortable. As it takes shape, notice the colors, textures, light and sounds. Be aware of how you feel in this serene place, and bring anything into the environment that would support your comfort and ease. Take a moment to just enjoy being here.

Now invite the person you have lost to join you, knowing that their image may come in any form, and they may appear any age. Take time to greet them, and then express anything you would like to. Invite them to speak with you. Allow the experience to evolve spontaneously, connecting naturally while maintaining your own comfort.

Thank them for coming, and then close your imagery eyes as you bring your attention back to the room you are in. Take a few moments being present with your feelings and experiences.

Remember that no matter how your life circumstances change and your feelings ebb and flow, and even grappling with unanswerable questions, come home to the precious, miraculous being that you are, whole and living, here and now.

Meditations for grief encourages the concentration on the heart chakra and root chakra for these trying times. This way you can start healing while still staying grounded. Keeping a routine will encourage a more fruitful and speedy grieving process. Below are some great meditations to try.
