Volunteers Set Manufacturing Standards for E Liquid
WHO Recommends Studies: With the growing popularity of electronic cigarettes in recent years, more studies are being recommended by governing agencies, such as the World Health Organization, to determine if the materials used in the manufacture of e-cigarettes are safe and effective. One of the essential products of e-cigarettes that agencies seek studies on is E Liquid (electronic liquid), also known as e-juice.
AEMSA Volunteers: Luckily for WHO there is the all-volunteer American E-Liquid Manufacturing Standards Association.
Since 2012, the volunteers at AEMSA have been dedicated to creating responsible and sustainable standards for the safe manufacturing of e-liquids used in electronic cigarettes; and promoting safety and responsibility through self-regulation.
AEMSA offers membership to manufacturers and non-manufacturers alike while encouraging implementation and development of standards for manufacturers who are not members.
E-Liquid Solution: To produce the vapor in e-cigarettes, a standard e-liquid solution is utilized. These solutions may vary slightly depending upon the brand and manufacturer, but the essential ingredients that make e-liquid what it is include:
- Propylene Glycol (PG)
- Vegetable Glycerin (VG)
- Polyethylene Glycol 400 (PEG400) mixed with flavor concentrates
- Nicotine concentrate (optional)
Approvals and Concerns: AEMSA acknowledges that three of the four ingredients used in the manufacture of e-liquid are already FDA-approved as food-grade ingredients that can be used in consumables: PG, VG, and PEG400. Nicotine, however, does not fall under the same guidelines, which can cause concerns. Many manufacturers are well aware of these concerns and they too want to ensure that what they are supplying to the public is the best product. This is precisely why the volunteers at AEMSA are doing their part to help spread awareness about proper, professional and responsible handling and distribution practices in the rapidly growing e-liquid industry.
Manufacturing Standards: E-liquid manufacturers and distributors care about their customers; they want the highest quality products to keep their customers happy and healthy. By taking steps to verify nicotine content, ensure quality of all e-liquid ingredients, and prepare products in clean, sanitary, and safe conditions, both manufacturers and distributors can calm concerns and make a difference for everyone in the e-liquid community.
