Private colleges come under criticism – Cost of MBBS course increased to Rs 2 crore in Tamil Nadu

MBBS at a private college in Tamil Nadu has now doubled and will now cost close to Rs 2 crore

In a new announcement, the cost for an MBBS at a private College in Tamil Nadu has now doubled and will now cost close to Rs 2 crore. The Private Medical Colleges and deemed universities in Tamil Nadu have increased fees for MBBS after the CBSE released the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) results on 17 August.

Key Takeaways

  • The average cost of studying at a premier college is now Rs 1.85 crore, up to Rs 1 crore as tuition fee and Rs 85 lakh as capitation fee.
  • All private medical colleges and deemed universities are now mandated to admit students solely on the basis of merit.
  • According to the new rules, students can independently apply to different colleges, but admission will be based on NEET ranks.

Overview

The increase in the fee has been heavily crticised as the autonomy of private colleges in fixing fees. Due to such a massive increase in fee, many students might be deprived of admission as they would not be able to afford such an exorbitant fee for a 5.5 year course.
