Treatment for Spinal Tumors!!!

Spine tumors are abnormal growths of tissue found in and around the spine. Spinal cord tumors can occur within or adjacent to the spinal cord.

Spinal tumors can be broadly classified into two categories:
·         metastatic Spinal Tumors
·         primary spinal tumors.

Metastatic spinal tumors originate somewhere else in the body and spread to the spine where they can cause fractures or compression of the spinal cord or nerves. Primary spinal tumors originate within the spine. They are quite rare and account for only 0.04% of all tumors and 10% of all bone tumors and  can either be benign or malignant. Some of the benign primary spinal tumors are-- osteoid osteoma, osteoblastoma, aneurysmal bone cyst, and giant cell tumor. Some of the malignant primary spinal tumors include: osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, chordoma, as well as multiple myeloma and lymphoma.  Metastatic spinal tumors can be treated with radiation therapy and chemotherapy, some Metastatic Spinal Tumors require surgical treatment. The most common cancers that move to the spine are breast, lung, renal and prostate.

Most of the spine tumors are located in the center of the back, but they also occur in the lower back or the neck region. The most common symptom of a spine tumor is pain.  Patients may experience persistent back or neck pain.  Other complaints may include numbness, tingling or weakness in the arms or legs, problems walking and maintaining balance, or problems with bowel and bladder function.

Several methods are used to diagnose spine tumors:
·         Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the spine is the most common test
·         X-rays will show vertebral fractures, common when the tumor invades the spinal bones.
·         CT scans show the bones more clearly and can help to determine the extent of the bony disease.
·         Other tests may include CT scans of the chest, abdomen and pelvis or a PET scan to determine where else the cancer may be.

There are three types of spinal tumors that can be treated by neurosurgery.
·         Vertebral Column Tumors.
·         Intradural-extramedullary Tumors.
·         Intramedullary Tumors.
