Tips To Make Your Shy Cat Come Out of Her Shell

Just like human beings, each and every cat has a unique personality. Some are very social while others like to sit alone silently. Shyness in your feline can be attributed to her upbringing. If she was not socialized enough as a kitten it might have resulted her into developing a shy nature towards new people. It can even be due to the fact that she has interacted with very few people which might have caused her to become shy while meeting new people.

Tips For Bringing A Shy Cat Out Of Her Shell

It is also a possibility that during her kitten days she was not exposed to men or tall people because of which she shies in meeting these people. But if you think that the shyness has developed recently due to fearful behavior, then it can be due to a medical problem. In such a situation, it is better to take the help of your veterinarian.

The best way to prevent this situation is by letting the cat mix with varied types of people when she is in her kitten stage. Introduce her to a wide variety of people encompassing different races, genders, sizes and ages. If you have an indoor cat invite people over to meet and greet. That is the best way to overcome the shyness.

Let us now look at some of the tips to make your shy cat come out of the shell and meet new people:

Tips To Make Your Shy Cat Come Out of Her Shell And Meet New People

Go Slow with Cat

If you overburden your kitty with new interactions it will make the problem worse. The best way is to go slow. Take time. Let her get used to you. This might include interacting with her several times on a daily basis for 15 to 20 minutes. Keep her personal space so that she does not get uncomfortable with people coming in and going out with loud noises. Let her get accustomed to one area of the house. This is the best way to make her feel happy and more social. If she is afraid of strangers give her time to come out of the shell by encouraging interaction.

Mentally Prepare Your Kitty For A Visitor

If a guest is coming over to your place and your kitty is full of shyness take small steps to prepare. The very first thing is to shut down the doors so that the cat cannot go out. But always have at least one space in the house where she can hide. You can also have cat furniture, shelves or window perch from where the kitty can watch the guest from a safe distance. You can even try certain scents to soothe her anxiety.

Give Rewards And Treats When The Cat Meets A New Person

You can use treats and rewards to encourage your kitty to meet the new person. For example; if your kitty is hiding you can throw her favorite toy. If she comes closer give her a treat. This will make her feel safe and encourage her to take baby steps towards the new person. You can even ask the new person to toss a treat to make him gain the trust of your feline.
